I had originally wanted to major in psychology. But a few people have told me that medical schools look down on you if you major in non sciences. Can you give me your input. And also if I major in psychology do I just take the required classes for medical school or should I major in bio or chem. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Medical schools really don’t care what your major is–so long as it’s an academic field. (i.e. not a vocational major like business, accounting, speech & language, nursing, communications, etc).

D1’s med school class has students in it with majors ranging from music theory & performance to Spanish to biochemistry to engineering.

What’s important is to do well in your coursework (your GPA will be an important factor in med school admissions) and perform very well in all pre-med requirements.

One thing to be aware of is that pre-med requirements are changing and that there will be a new MCAT starting in 2015 that includes new material. Be sure that you stay in touch with your school’s health professions advising office to keep abreast of these changes.
