Major in education or subject I wanna teach?

Hey! I'm a high school senior now, and am IBDP student.. I'm thinking of education major. I want to teach maths maybe.. actually I don't know what subject is good for me.. I want to teach overseas as I am an international student and love traveling too.
So my question is: should I major in education or the subject that I want to teach..?
Or is there a way to choose a specific subject within education major?
I heard not many people majoring in education.. is that true?
Let's say I want to teach maths in the future. I think I can teach high school maths but I don't think I can do maths major! :( I'm doing Maths SL and always get 7..
OMG... I'm so nervous.. anyone can suggest me in this situation?
Thanks a lot! (-:

Hi there,

Don’t be too nervous, it’ll hopefully all work out well in the end.

From what I’ve read there are two ways to go about becoming a teacher, and it largely depends on where you live. You can either go for the base degree of what you want to teach, for example if you want to teach Mathematics, you can go for a degree in Mathematics, and later sit for the teaching accreditation examination of your country. Alternately there are a lot of programs that are designed specially for students who want to teach particular subjects, the degree you gain looks something like “Bachelors of Education with Mathematics”.

So look into universities directly, don’t think about things with too broad a perspective, it will tend to vary from place to place. Be sure to check whether or not the universities you’re interested in give you a degree that is accredited by the education system in your country/i.e whether or not you will be able to teacher after it.

You did say you want to travel and teach, so it may help if you can decide before hand where you might want to start with, but if that decision is not possible at the moment don’t stress. Private teaching is still always an option, and if you know your stuff getting accredited in a new place shouldn’t be ‘too’ difficult.

I hope this helped. Good luck!
