I am interested in the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, for studying International Relations, which offers a wide range of majors as well as joint-degree and major/minor schemes. Do you think it would be more useful to just do an International Relations major, or combine and do an International Politics major with a minor in Law? I mean the first one might be more specific and go more in depth, which might give a slight advantage in that area, but the second one is more general and might offer more options. What do you think?

Maybe this isn't true for schools abroad, but in American universities, regardless of whether you want to major in International Relations alone or major in IR AND have a minor, you'd still have to complete the same amount of coursework for the Int. Relations degree in either case. For the latter option, though, you'd have to complete the required courses for the Law minor in addition to all the courses for the IR major.

So if you choose to major in IR and minor in Law, you'll still be just as thoroughly educated in IR as if you'd chosen to major in IR alone.

Regardless of minors, you need to take a certain amount of courses in order to graduate with a degree in IR. A minor isn't going to change that, or make your major "more general."

I know that wasn't explained very concisely . . . does that make sense? :)

It makes sense, but I think for this university the situation is different. You see, in Aberystwyth, International Politics by itself isn't a major, it is made specifically for joint-degree and major/minor schemes (whereas International Relations is actually a major and cannot be combined with a minor). I think the amount of workload will be the same (but don't trust me on this, I could be wrong). International Politics is a more general field than International Relations. So it would be either doing a specific subject like International Relations, or doing a more general subject like International Politics with a little of another subject like Law. Which would you think would be more useful?

P.S: Just for clarification, in this university there are limitations as to what minors and what joint-degree combinations you can choose according to your field. For example, you can't take a major in History with a minor in Chemistry.
