Major mistake on UC Application!!

So I just realized that I made a huge (dumb) mistake on my UC application. When doing my Fall '10 update report, I couldn't access my fall transcripts because there was a hold on my record. (I could not afford to pay my bill) So for my classes, I calculated my grade by adding up my total total points received in class by the end of the term. I got into Cal...and today I finally was able to pay off all my fees to have my transcripts sent out. Upon looking at my transcripts I realized that 2 grades were inaccurate on my application.

For my Macroeconomics course I received a B, but I put a B+..and for my Global Economy course I received a C+, but I put a B.

(I did NOT lie on my application to intentionally make my academic history appear better than it was. I also still had a good GPA for fall since I took 40 units and the rest were A's...and these courses were elective courses that I did not need for IGETC.)

I haven't sent my transcripts to Cal yet and I will call my Berkeley advisor ASAP on Monday. My question is, has anyone heard of anyone's offer being revoked because of this? I understand that inaccuracies will put me at risk of being rescinded but this was really an honest mistake and I'm freaking out right now! I would really appreciate your guys' input on this. Thanks.

Thats when the letter of doom comes out . The UC system will assume you did this on purpose to get into Cal and then will send you a letter asking to explain this, OR you will be forever banned from the UC system . Thats what generally happens .

If you have a very good reason, and it seems you do , they may let it slide . But it will be a few weeks before they decide on this . Bad move dude, you never put down what grades you think you received. You should of asked the teachers personally what your final grade in each class was . By just guessing you put your self in a very bad spot. Good luck, though an inconsistency with your application is one of the worst things that can happen .

Thisislife - Thank for you response. Yeah, I know it was a completely DUMB thing to do, but at the same time I feel like I wasn’t even guessing because I based them off the total points I received…but obviously, that didn’t work out for me. do you know of anyone personally who experienced this?

I know it seems super late now to report it, but hopefully they’ll take into consideration that I updated them as soon as I found out

i’m just freaking out because I feel like it was a dumb but honest mistake that will cost me my admission.

Mentally prepare your self to explain this whole thing in WRITING .
But from Cals perspective they may just rescind you . I don’t know anyone who’s been though this, since, especially for Cal , its just insane . Your running the risk of getting your application rescinded over not paying your fees back then . I understand you think your in the right, but when you update your application they seriously expect for you to have your final grades from fall .

Good luck.

Wow OP

Instead of contacting your professors of your perspective classes to find out your final grade, you decided to lie and falsify your grades on your application.

Whether intentional or unintentional, you falsified your grades. Can you imagine if everyone did that? Hmmm…there goes the integrity of the transfer agreements we have.

You deserve to get rescinded if your overall GPA was a factor in your admissions. Imagine the many students who could have possibly been denied due to missing the GPA cutoff (if there was such a thing).

Tisk tisk, shame on your brother…

The problem is that in the case of both errors you gave yourself a higher grade on your application than you earned rather than one higher and one lower or both lower and that is going to raise suspicions about your intentions. Raising the B to B+ might not be seen as too terrible since in many cases pluses and minuses on a grade are not used in calculations of GPAs and the difference is small, basically you got a B in the class and whether it was a B+ or a B- could be of little consequence.

Putting a B on your application when your grade was actually a C+ might not seem that much different than the B to the B+ case but it is. Instead of saying you received a C in the class you claimed a B. A huge difference is seen between a B and a C irregardless of pluses and minuses. C signifies average work while B indicates very good work and while Bs do not always help you a lot, they are vastly preferable to Cs which can really hurt you when applying to a very selective school like UC Berkeley.

As Thisislife pointed out, your explanation for not having a transcript to work from when filling out your application is not going to sound very credible or reasonable to UC Berkeley. I have no idea how carefully they check applications and transcripts for agreement so it might not even be noticed and you will be safe. On the other hand, you should prepare to be rescinded since that is the most likely outcome if they do notice it.

You can’t view unofficial transcripts when you haven’t paid your dues…?

I think the worst part of this isn’t that you might get rescinded from Cal, but additionally that you’ll have to deal with this discrepancy with any other UCs you were accepted to. I’d start notifying any backups on Monday of your grade change too.

Yeah I agree with killmyentourage, better to let all of them know now and see what your situation is with all the UCs, especially since the SIR deadline is coming up very soon.

baby avery - i’m a girl, not a guy. i didn’t e-mail my profs because at the time it seemed clear what grades i was going to get. if they revoke my admission, then i’ll take complete responsibility for it. but to set the record straight i did not put those grades down with the intention to deceive anyone.

also, the grade changes only bring my gpa down .02 points (3.67 to 3.65), so i’d be surprised if the change in my overall GPA was the reason for revocation, as opposed to the inaccurate grades

lemaitre - yes, the C is what i’m sorry about most - and it sucks because its an elective course that i didn’t even need to take anyway. i doubt i’m gonna just leave it and hope that they don’t see it, cuz its more that they probably will see the discrepancy. i’m really just hoping its not too late to notify them of this.

seet0o - no, everytime i tried to access them, it said i couldn’t because there were holds on my record. i took 12 courses that semester and had medical bills to pay off which is why i couldn’t pay all my dues at once.

killmyentourage - no, the worst part is that i only applied to cal and la, and only got into Cal!!! =(

i’m going to talk to my professors to discuss my grades next week. like i said before even though i did not do this intentionally, i understand that i messed up and i’m willing to take full responsibility for it. wish me luck.

You have a 3.65 and ONLY applied to Cal and UCLA? Wow, that’s pretty ballsy!

Maybe its not too late to contact UC Merced. Someone on this board said they were emailing admission offers to those rejected by all other UCs they applied to…

Hey Merced might is only growing, it might not be all that bad.
But if you don’t clear this up with Cal you’ll be banned from the entire UC system .
Lying or guessing facts is never a good thing.

Threads like these always make me run to double check my own crap. Good luck with telling Cal!

12 courses…?!

By now, UC Berkeley has reviewed the final transcripts that came in by July 15th and will match it up against what you reported. I am assuming that if you didn’t hear from them, you are fine. But I would suggest talking to someone at Cal first. Cal starts in 2 weeks, btw.

Good Luck!

similar thing happened to me with my uc application. im just curious to know what happened to your situation?

@nicolebagh
this thread does seems a bit melodramatic if you ask me, and no one did. glad it was last year. hope you just make the corrections and ask if they need any additional information how why they were entered wrong. maybe they don’t even want an explanation and will just check whether or not they are key grades for key classes in your major. if they are electives, that seems less dire. good luck.

good luck? lol

I went to a JC where pluses and minuses weren’t used. I accidentally gave myself a B+ in a class where I got a B.

It was caught after I was admitted and no one batted an eye. I am at UCI tough, not UCB, and my GPA was well above the average for UCI.

hey send us an update of what happened
