in what year do you declare your major? and also, is the intended major we put on our app what we have to do, or could we change our minds between now and when/if accepted?

You can declare your major anytime you want; however, if you undecided, you must declare a major by the end of your sophomore year. But you still can change you major after that. The average student changes their major usually 3-5 times.

If you want to change your major now as an applicant, you will have to tell Cal. But Cal doesn't consider majors if you're in the school of letters and science; if you want to change to engineering, then you might have a little more trouble. Changing majors between schools is hard too.

On a grander scale, some schools consider you undecided. Georgetown marks you as undecided if you're an undergrad applicant, but you can list a preference. You're still admitted as undecided though. (Only if you're applying to the College. If you apply to the other schools, you have to declare a major).

UCLA, for some majors, admit you as a pre-major status. For example, I'm a political science major. However, I'm under a pre-poli sci major status until I complete the lower division courses. Then I have to petition the political science department in order to be considered that major.

what do you mean "Cal doesn't consider majors if you're in the school of letters and science"? They don't mind if you change within the college?

That means that when they review your application, they will not being admitting by major. They will not be saying, "We have 1000 spots available in Political Science." They admit by school, not major. They don't look at your major if you're in the Letters and Sciences. If you're in engineering, that's a different matter.

Changing majors within a college is a lot easier than changing between colleges. When you do get accepted at Cal, you'll be able to change your major within the school relatively easily (I think); however, for some majors, you will have to petition the department. Universities don't expect a 17 or 18 year old to know what they want to major in for sure and what they want to do 5, 10 years down the road.

So, yes, Cal doesn't mind you changing majors within the college once your accepted.

so. Cal does mind if you change colleges? (like letter and science to engineering)?
also, i heard that engineering school is really hard to get in, and EECS and Bioen. is like impossible to get in. but what about chemical engineering which is what i put on my appl.? is it hard to get admitted too?

Chemical engineering is in the college of chemistry. It's possible to transfer L&S to COE (I did, from L&S to BioE). I suspect chemE might not be AS hard to transfer into, in part b/c the weeding starts right up in chemE with chem 4A and 4B and intensifies when you hit the upper division courses.

how hard is bioengineering to get in to?
