Hello I am currently a Junior in high school right now and I was planning to become an anesthesiologist. According to my fellow peers and teachers, majoring in Biology would be best in going to medical school. Would there be any other sciences I would have to study? Also what are some good colleges for majoring in Biology? (West Coast)

As long as you complete the premedical requirements (Usually, 2 semesters each of general biology, general and organic chemistry, general physics, and calculus), you can major in any field (though typically an arts & science or engineering field) for your premedical studies. Most premeds major in a bioscience field (e.g., general biology, neuroscience, molecular biology, et al.), but chemistry, psychology also are popular. Successful med school applicants have also majored in humanities (e.g., philosophy, history) and social science fields (e.g., anthropology).

It’s too soon for you to choose a medical specialty. If you get into a medical school, there will be plenty of time to do that after you’ve been exposed to them.

As noted above, you will need to complete basic courses in supporting sciences.

Many schools on the West coast offer strong biology programs, e.g., all of the UC campuses, U Washington, Stanford.

Most pre-meds major in biology out of convenience (the biology major courses cover most or all of the pre-med course list). However, you can major in anything and take the pre-med courses alongside.

One disadvantage of majoring in biology is that if you do not get into any medical school (most pre-meds do not get into any medical school), job and career prospects for biology graduates are poor, since the market is flooded with biology graduates (probably a lot of pre-meds who did not get into any medical school).

Thanks guys I think I’ll try to go for either U Washington or UCLA. Hmm… I would have to think what to major in now since I could get not even get into a medical school.
