Majoring in Economics and Finance/Business at Northeastern

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if at Northeastern you can major in both economics in CAS and finance (or some sort of business major) in CBA? Do you think this is possible or is anyone current doing this? What do you guys think? THANK YOU!!

Starting this year, they are setting up a dual major between Business and Economics. They haven’t fully set it out yet, but the econ advisors say it’ll be run out of the Business college. It should be pretty popular once it’s set up and running.

It is much harder to start in Economics and then add on Business than vice versa, because of the strict rules CBA has on who can take their classes and VERY tough transfer processes. So start off in Business if you think you want to do Business.

Double majoring would be very difficult just based on the sheer number of classes you would need to take, especially since co-op is required for Business, it’s very difficult to take Business courses if you aren’t a Business major (even if you’re planning on changing or trying to get a minor), and double majoring between colleges isn’t even always allowed.

Like I said, it’s new so no one is doing it yet. But three years ago no one was doing Math/Econ and now it’s insanely popular. Once the Business advisors figure everything out, it should be fine. Contact them to see if there is any supposed timeline on when they think the program might be available.

I guess it might be a bit easier if you come in with some AP courses that qualify for core or other required courses, because then you could take the Econ courses in those time slots. Otherwise, I would think it would be tough to fulfill all the requirements, especially for BSIB, which also has a required language minor.

Thank you! That sounds great and I’m definitely going to call. Also, I applied to CAS as an economics major, but I want to switch to CBA. Do you think that would be possible? Do you need to wait to apply to CBA? Thank you so much everyone!!

Hey,

I recently got transferred into this dual major(I was a ‘‘pure’’ business major before). Basically, your college will be the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, not CBA, but you will have two advisors. You have to do one co-op as neuchime said, which is the business part of the dual major. You can choose one concentration in business and in economics there isn’t really a concentration but you can pick your electives(4 are available: Some examples: Financial Economics, Managerial Economics, History of Economic Thought, Money and Banking, Energy Economics, etc.).

Due to some IB credits, I am also thinking of minoring in math, so it is definitely a plus if you have some AP or IB credits.

Hope this helped.
