Is it true that many liberal arts schools are having trouble attracting male applicants, thus making it "easier" for males to get in?

yes.

That's true for virtually all LACs. They want to have a male:female balance of about 50:50, but that's very hard to accomplish because fewer males than females go to college, and most males are not attracted to a LAC environment. The are more likely to desire a college with major sports.

The LACs with the most difficult time attracting males tend to be the ones that were formerly all female. But attracting males still is a problem for most if not all LACs.

Incidentally, S, 19, is a freshmen at a LAC, Rollins College in Fla., and loves it. :)

gamayshark, from what I've read males might have a small statistical advantage, but I wouldn't take that to mean you could get into a selective LAC with sub-par grades and scores. A male could -- sounds like -- maybe slide in with stats a tad lower than comparable female applicant, but I don't think that edge would make the most selective LACs go from being a reach school to a match school just because a person is male. They still turn away thousands of strong male applicants every year.

In terms of admissions rates, yes, it usually is easier for males to get in. However, the males who are admitted usually have stats JUST as high as female applicants. The problem is, more females with those same stats get turned away. For example, 100 females with 1400 SAT scores apply, and only 29 get in. Only 70 Males apply with that same SAT score and maybe 40 will get in, to keep the gender ratio. If someone has lower stats, whether they are male or female, they will still probably get rejected

Some data:
