Management Information Systems Advice

Hey everyone,

I've just completed my first year of college. I took my first MIS class, which involved various HBS case studies of how IT is used in different industries. I really enjoyed the class, yet I realize my next MIS classes (if I do decide to major) will be more technical.

My next classes will cover some Visual Basic, and database design (SQL, ASP). I took one year of Java programming in high school, but I really feel I need a more sound fundamental understanding of programming. (I'm actually nervous about deciding to major in MIS because I feel I am behind in my programming knowledge).

Would anyone happen to know some good introduction books on these topics, or even perhaps website tutorials? Also, I would appreciate any industry experience from those who have decided to major in MIS (such as other good programs/languages to know - for example, we used XL Miner for data mining).

I am eager to learn and challenge myself, so any advice or insight would be helpful.

Thanks!

Also, if anyone has tied their MIS major to sports, I would really like to hear your experience. We did an NBA data mining assignment, and I realize there is statistical analysis used in scouting/game preparation (e.g. - Houston Rockets/Daryl Morey/Shane Battier).

It really would combine both of my passions, and I feel it’s hard to stray from the traditional route of business majors sometimes.

I couldn’t refer you to the best book out there since there are thousands of books on vb and sql/mysql/asp. I’d maybe ask in the engineering major forum since more CS majors might hang out in that forum section?
