Many options to consider - NROTC, USNA (Prep) and USMMA

Well thank you so very much! Pays to know people who know how to get things done. :)
It truly seems a good idea with all the military colleges there are. Great schools out there for kids who aren't looking at Academies but want a regimental lifestyle outside of ROTC programs. My kid looked at all of them for his plan b schools. Suny Maritime & some others probably should be listed as well. There has been alot of talk about ROTC programs but some kids really are interested in The Citadel, VMI & others. Hope they give them a shot at their own forums to trade info and meet others. Thanks again!

Ooops. Before I get corrected... I meant not outside of ROTC programs but rather outside ROTC programs at regular civy colleges. Yep, I know the Citadel and others are ROTC. I blubbered up on my thoughts when transferring from my head to my typing hands. Here's a link to some of the colleges if anyone is interested:

Suny Maritime could probably be added as a sub forum as well. Great school.

Massachussetts Maritime Academy

I think it would be OK to duplicate some such as Texas A&M...in a separate forum that emphasizes military preparation...not just ROTC alone.

Yep. What they say is true. Great minds really do think alike. There really are quite a few and it would be beneficial to have them someplace for the kids. Hope CC heeds the request. Pleeeezeeee.

California Maritime Academy

It was my son's ultimate back up school, but ranked # 2 in weather behind the real USC. (JM that was for you)

Moved to a new thread...

Well I'm back. My son received his appointment from USMMA and is on the waiting list for the USNA Foundation program. Also still waiting on the CGA. Of course he is absolutely thrilled and wanted to jump the gun abit and accept the USMMA without waiting to see whatelse comes through. We will be going to the open house on April 17th. I've already printed out the various parents manuals and tips for USMMA and my (our) heads are swimming.

????waiting list for the USNA foundation program???? I would have thought the offers would have gone out already- especially as the candidates have to complete an application process at those institutions, abet, a shortened, modified version.....and be accepted.....I was not aware there was a waiting list for the foundation spots, other than the admissions referral.....is there such a thing?

Congrats to your son and you, Ballstamom! He has many fine choices! USMMA is a great, tough academy and gets him to sea. It would be an adventure! Do visit and do keep your options open as long as possible - even with a deposit at another school through the summer, just in case...

Having gone through the foundation program I cant begin to tell you the advantage it gave me over my classmates coming straight from high school. An extra year was well worth it. Coming into plebe year from the foundation school I attended, I had 4 other classmates whom I had already spent a year with and were like brothers. It gave me an extra year to mature, and get in much better shape. The academics were challenging but this gave me a significant advantage plebe year since I had already taken all of the courses, which eliminated one side of the stress plebes face. I also checked out USMMA but my heart was set on the Naval Academy. In the end both are great schools and US service academies which produce fine officers and leaders

navy07- our son is in the foundation program this year, so your post is most encouraging. May I ask what foundation school you went to, and what classes, if any, you were able to validate at USNA? Thanks!

I went to the Kiski school right outside of pittsburgh. I will tell you to begin with I am no genius. I had a 3.8 in high school and focused most of my attention on sports. I came here for one reason, and that is to get my comission in the Marine Corps. If you can validate courses then do it, but I didnt feel, based on how rigorous chemistry is, that my year of chemistry at prep school would prepare me for Chem 2 here. one of my roomates validated a semester of calc and a smester of spanish. He started taking calc 2 and spanish 2 but quickly dropped back down to the ones I was in who didnt validate anything. He took those AP classes in high school but said the depth of the information he was expected to learn was way beyond what he did and what was required for the validation tests. Bottom line, everybody graduates with a comission and a diploma that says US Naval Academy on it, regardless of how much you validated.

Ballstamom! Congrats to your son! I musta missed this yesterday. Tell him to hang on tight! He still has decisions to make with the incoming info. Of course, I have a favorite.....

GO KP!!!

Thanks Jamzmom! We are all pretty excited about Kp now. As much as we want our son to hear the final word on the foundation program we know that his heart is set on KP. USNA has been his goal since he was in 7th grade but knowing all that we've learned about USMMA and the options that they offer, I'm surprised more kids aren't making the switch. The Service Academy CC community seems like a pretty tight knit group and I can't wait to come on board. We are in CT so if there are any other KP parents out there in the area let me know. Thanks for the support Jamzmom.

OH welcome Ballstamom...come on over to the USMMA forum :)

Actually, 8kids mom is from Conn. I believe...her daughter is a sophmore.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!

Navy07, I consider you a genius. Too bad. You won't change my mind.

Hey PM, we should wake up Boss. He's actually a surrogate KP parent from CT. Ballstamom, even nine months in to this, we're still finding out about all of the options USMMA offers. It truly is amazing. Best wishes with everything. Its an exciting time.

Navy2010, how many more days until they give the papers to the torpedo? Should be sooooon. Post the minute you hear! I'm excited!! He's a genius too!

JM- actually, the admissions board will make their final review of the foundation kids on Thursday, April 6th- at 10:30am. These last few days have been a killer, and while this year has flown by, it seems like Thursday is still light years away right now.

Our son called us today to let us know that Cpt Wallace from the foundation program will be visiting their school on the 11th- he serves as the BGO to all the foundation kids- and the torpedo is just hoping he will hear something before then- as are we. While he would like nothing better than to get a blue folder from Cpt Wallace when he comes, I think the thought of 5 extra days of "not knowing" will be truly torturous, and I know the kids are counting down to the 6th already! (gosh, I wish they had a spell check on here!!!! a mind is a terrible thing to lose- and I think I have lost mine!!!)

Funny, someone started a thread on "keeping your eyes on the goal"...... it is so, so close now, but still just out of reach.....it has been a long haul.

So if you can spare one, send a little prayer out to all the foundation kids who are sweating it out these last few days- we have met many of them, and they are such great kids- it will break my heart if anything BUT a big fat envelope gets delivered to any of their doors next week!

I would say its time for some merlot and chocolate despite my struggle with this diet, but my stomach is tied up in knots these days- but I do have a bottle on standby for Thursday should good news arrive! And I will be honored to share it with you too!!! :)

The main thing is to go to where you feel most comfortable and capable to develope into the best officer you can.

Ballstamom,

My son was the felt the same way about USNA except he was talking about it since he was 7 years old. Went to camps there and did NASS. But when he first went to KP in the March of his Junior year and liked it a lot and then went back for an overnight in August after he had been to NASS and decided it was his first choice. He had the chance to choose between the two and went to KP. It has been a great choice for him. He is happy and doing well.

Its amazing what a difference a year makes. Now he's getting ready to go to sea, but first he will get to spend a special few weeks with your son gently getting him and his classmates ready for the year ahead.

LFWB, Looking forward to having your son around to give mine that little guidance! And just curious...will I be able to pick you, Jamzmom and prayerful mom out at Parents Weekend...will your names badges sport an "a.k.a." <wink></wink>
