March 2012 SAT I Critical Reading Thread

What I put:

SC:
neophyte
implacable
contentious
controversy
anomalous

china
the chest is not sinister
the garment or w/e is an intergenerational tradition
the author considered the aunt to be an influence on her personality
the author was first struck by her aunt’s appearance
the rice thing shows the aunt’s attention to detail
the comment about heritage shows the aunt thinks about the world around her
acute most nearly means severe
the author does not fully identify with any culture

neatness
passage 1 would say about the explainations for anxiety offered in passage 2 that messiness acutally does cause loss of time
both passages think neatness is generally considered a virtue

emily
the description shows her idealization of emily
the passage contains everything except an appeal to reason

chaplin
beginning shows difference between process and outcome
author is skeptical
the sentence beginning with 132 is the transition
analgoy: the poet who revises poems endlessly to get a perfect sonnet
chaplin is a perfectionist

sawdust
the mill owner responds to the author with humor
the cousins are miniscule particles
the sahara desert analogy shows the absurdity of the job
the use of the word insidious suggests that inanimate particles are conniving
the description shows that the author is beginning to dislike the mill
the mention of specific knowledge serves to highlight the author’s feelings of isolation
the author enjoyed the work

politics
champion
critics think the baseball analogy is flawed
passage 2 thinks the electoral college representing a cross section of voters
something about causing the majority of voters to be not represented
passage 1 talks about criticisms that passage 2 thinks are faulty (or something of that nature)
tone of final paragraph in passage 1 is more evenhanded than that of the final paragraph in passage 2

space/dark matter
the 2 space shuttles is to fix a possible misconception
the part about skin is to fix a misconception
the jungle analgoy suggests that the outer reaches of space are impossible to imagine
the parantheses defines a boundary
being spirited into jungle would be considered revelatory
the final paragraph reiterates a point

process vs outcome

Artistic Vision contrasted with reality. Chaplin wanted his shots to be “natural”, something about “rebellious” and “anarchy”… but he had to endure repeated shoots.

I thought the second paragraph was a summary of the first paragraph. (neatness). Does anyone have all the neatness questions?

steven: yes i do remember it, no i do not think i got it right. i put artistic expression and _______ but i really didn’t like that one

I put process and outcome. There was also artistic vision and something

the teacher was ____ in her lecture about disobedience to the students… or something really forgot but along that line… maladroit/culpable/jaded/etc, what was it? I put culpable

@steve
Contrast between the process and outcome

@everyone else discussing quite possibly the easiest question on the CR exam

the answer was SONNETS…omg how hard is that? The person doing something over and over till it was perfect.

Hmm contentious? Do you know part of the sentence. I don’t remember that question.

What’s the neophyte question? I don’t remember putting that down for SC.

@baabaa READ the rest of the thread next time. It’s peremptory.

why neophyte? what was the question?

What was the neophyte question? never mind its the experimental

@lanayru

I think that was experimental

I do not remember the neophyte.

I’m almost entirely sure that was an experimental section. I got an experimental writing and didn’t find any Sentence Completion that could have been completed with the word (beginner).

@blacksheep im fairly certain its “peremptory”, sorry

also does anyone remember the phobias question? choices were something like precipitate/confluence, spawn/paucity, deduced/dichotomy… i put the first one

edit: i also do not remember putting neophyte for anything. what was the question? xD

It wasn’t experimental. I remember the rest of the answers to the SC. I don’t remember contentious and neophyte

jerky: Yea it’s precipitate/confluence.

Yes, I put the first one precipate

i put confluence (fingers crossed)

Is it possible for people to have the same exp? Cuz I got the neophyte question too…

I said precipitate/confluence I think?
