March 2012 SAT I Critical Reading Thread

@ Monepo: What is the consensus on the sinister/vital/regal debate?

@ clarinet: Thanks - I was pretty sure it was “sinister” as well. The argue against change/undertaking question… I put “support an undertaking” because I thought the author wanted the general public to become more educated about the electoral college and the process. But some of the other arguments are very convincing.

@russo.
I got the beguile/havoc question wrong. I wasn’t thinking straight.
I also got a science fiction question about unrealistic expectation one wrong
I got the planets are staying the same distance question wrong,
I’m putting the undertaking question as wrong just because I’m pessimistic.
And one more but I can’t think of it right now.

What was the beguiled and havoc question i forgot…

Something about people being beguiled by intellectuals so they were unaware of the havoc it could cause? idk.

The sinister question has ben resolved a while ago. Someone actually found the passage online and at that moment, it was clear that sinister was answer. Go back 5-10 pages.

As for the world series, wasnt it to argue against a change? Where exactly was the undertaking in his argument. Someone clear this up for me. The only thing I remember was that the world series pruporse was to accept things the way they are.

Sentence was about people being beguiled by principles of demagogues, but some other people realized the havoc there would be if they follow the principles.

I’m so happy right now. I think I either got 0 or maybe -1 on the Reading section. Fingers crossed!

@ clarinet: I didn’t have that passage so it’s experimental.

@ Niceboat: Lol, I’m putting my answer as wrong because I’m pessimistic too.

I felt CR could’ve gone a lot worse for me. I’ll be retaking in May/June probably because I missed at least 2 math questions due to carelessness.

@ eagle: I’m trying to find the article right now by googling phrases like “electoral college, world series, rules of the game” but I guess it’s not specific enough. If anyone remembers direct parts of it, maybe we can find the article.

My reasoning was that the last sentence said something about a need for voters to get educated or something like that.

@russ

Maybe adding Al Gore would help your search a little bit.

Also the 15 minority presidents including Abraham Lincoln, who is regarded as one of our greatest presidents.

not those who make the most runs during the season…

These are the 2 bits I remember.

I’m trying to look up the electoral college passage (#2? is that the one with the world series?) Anyone remember key words and phrases?

Idk…but i am pretty sure…beguile-havoc is not the answer…

agree…i think when the author KNEW her great aunt from appearance…but MET her and struck by her charm…there is proof in the paragraph saying the author could find no sign of blabla but calmness and humor whtever…

anyone know the answer for the “sign…”?
is it notice or indication?

indication.

does anybody remember the one from last section (double passage)
it was only pertaining to the first passage: the author argues that the “advocates” should

was it analyze the disadvantages to any alternatives that might replace?
or acknowledge that there are both advantages and disadvantages to all programs?

i put the latter because the first one only focused on analyzing the DISadvantages…

I’m surprised any of you remember the questions.

I couldn’t even remember the first reading section during the test!

^I put analyze disadvantages. I think that’s what people said were “find good solutions”.

hey guys, what do you think a -8 would look like??

Does anyone remember what the answer choices were for the “Chaplin can best be described as a…” question?
