Marquette-DePaul game

As future Golden Eagles hopefuls, we were excited to watch the game on ESPN2 today. Is there a big rivalry between these two schools, due to their proximity?

Hope Marquette makes the Final Four!

Well, historically yes, there is a rivalry. DePaul isn't much of a match-up these days. Marquette should have won by a bit more. That start of the second half was not so good. Let's hope they do well Monday night at Notre Dame!!

P.S. The games at the Bradley Center are so much fun.

So psyched! The Marquette/Notre Dame game is on ESPN Monday night.

Did you go to the game? Saw on the Marquette website that there was a parents event that day. Are you involved in the parents organization, being so close to Milwaukee?

Also, saw the temp was below 10 degrees, although will warm up by the end of the week.

I know y'all are from up there, but my gosh, how do the kids handle that cold?

Wisconsin weather is just something you get used to, although this year has been really cold. You just put a hat and warm coat on and move quickly if you have to go outside. The up side of winter is that when it is in the twenties and low thirties, you've got all the fun winter activities going on.

We have a five game package -- we were not at yesterday's game but we will be there next Saturday against Georgetown.
And no, I'm not really involved in the parents' organization, short of receiving their newsletters.

It's been a long and very cold and snowy winter. The kids figure it out, though. Didn't seem to stop some of them from lining up VERY early yesterday!

Wow, Georgetown! That will be awesome! Two Jesuit colleges. I'll have to check if that one is on TV.

Do the kids get in the games with their IDs, or do they have to get season tickets?

LSU has a lottery for football games, which is such a shame, as their stadium is on campus. The poor kids don't even get to go to the games. Although I think they have a lot of fun tailgating.

Back in the days when Shaq played basketball there, friends told me kids would start lining up on Tuesday morning for a Friday night game. Totally worth it, I'm sure.

Well, son wants snow. I guess he'll get some!

l

The kids can all purchase season tickets for, I think, $85. That includes the women's games, too. You only wait in line on the day of the game if you want one of the seats that are way out in front. Otherwise, the student section accomodates all of them.
Many (if not all) of the other sports are free with ID.

If your son hasn't found this yet, there's a great BB fan site at muscoop.com with most of the BB news under the "hanging at the al" tab. Another good one is at crackedsidewalks.com.

I'm an alum, class of '74 so I had the good fortune to be there for many of the great Al McGuire teams that were always in the top ten and for a good while ranked #1. We made an NCAA Final Four run my senior year, losing to NC State in the Finals.

Thanks! Really hope he goes to games. He's not a sports fan, or so he claims, but he seems to know more about sports than he lets on.

How did you get from Marquette to Texas?

You can't go to MU and not be a basketball fan by the time you leave.

I actually grew up in Ohio and moved to Texas about five years after graduation for my (then) job.

There were a few kids I knew from Texas when I was there, in fact several from San Antonio were good friends. One of the founders of Texas Instruments, Patrick Haggerty is an MU alum and also a big donor (several buildings) to the school. Haggerty Hall, College of Engineering and Haggerty Museum of Art (which was under construction my senior year) are two of his most notable gifts.

The Haggerty family have also been big donors to Jesuit Prep in Dallas while the other three TI founders were instrumental in founding and being huge benefactors to St. Mark's School of Texas where my son went to school.

Craziness in the Big East last night -- Nova beats Pitt, Providence beats Syracuse, and Cincy beats Georgetown. Very interesting.
Shows me that we need to get DeJuan Blair in foul trouble when we play Pitt!

My son and I just came back from a visit last weekend and were very impressed! Marquette beat Georgetown that day and there were smiles everywhere. Yes it is cold, but
the students seem excited and happy about their school. We would love to hear more about how other students/parents on CC feel about their education at Marquette.

Please, let us know about your visit to Marquette. We visited last summer, so would love to know what it was like in the winter, with students around.

Were you there for a special program? We haven't heard about any open houses yet this year.

I just visited this past weekend. I went for the scholarship test competition.
We got into Milwaukee right around midnight Friday night (Saturday morning, I guess), and drove around the Marquette campus for just a couple of minutes. there were tons of students walking about, all in groups of about 4-10. It was also rather warm last weekend, especially for milwaukee, being about 40 degrees that night, and getting up to the mid 50s the next day.
the campus was nice, the city was nice. i liked it quite a bit.
As far as the test itself, it was pretty difficult, but I met some students that say they'll definitely be going there next year, and they were very friendly. One of the kids mothers even offered to drive me up for the Syracuse game if I would fly into Chicago (where they live) since I wouldn't otherwise be able to make the trip.

Wow, that was really nice to offer you a ride. I get the impression there are a lot of really nice, helpful people up there at Marquette.

If you went for the scholarship test, does that mean that you have been accepted? What department/school did you apply to?

How did you get from Kansas City to Milwaukee? Did you drive? If you flew, where to and what airline? Did you have to miss school on Friday to make it up there for the test?

Anyone out there who can give us advice about getting up there in minimal amount of time? We're coming from New Orleans. We'd really like to do a visit during school time, without son missing school. I know we'll be there on a weekend, but would like to see campus while school is in session, rather than the summer, which we've already done.

Good luck and hope to see you on campus in a couple of years!

Its worth taking a day off school to see things firsthand. When we were visiting schools with my D we arranged to have her sit in on classes on the Monday after the scholarship day sessions (at another school not MU) but I am sure that could be arranged at MU. This would mean flying up on Friday and leaving on Monday afternoon/evening but you could have a Saturday night out in Milwaukee and take in one of its fine German restaurants.

Midwest Express flies from DFW to Milwaukee and is a very nice airline.

Yes, I've been accepted. I'm in the college of arts and science, though I'm going to talk to them about doubling my major with a major in the communications college (I think I want to double International Affairs with Journalism).

We drove from Kansas City to Milwaukee. Actually, I'm at a boarding school, so my parents drove from KC to my school (2 hours), and then we drove to Milwaukee (9 1/2). We left my school around 2 and got into Milwaukee around midnight. I didn't miss class.

My daughter is a freshman this year and is so happy with her choice of Marquette University. She has made great friendships and has enjoyed many of her classes/professors.

My daughter was granted an Ignatius Scholarship with Magis Enhancement for four years. She also competed for the Pere Marquette Explorer Scholarship and was granted that scholarship - I believe one of 12 granted. She had to write an essay and I told her it is probably her most highly paid single piece of writing.

I would be glad to answer any questions from the perspective of a parent of a first year Marquette student.

An easy way from the Milaukee airport to the University is Airport Connection - Shuttle and Town Car Service Serving Milwaukee and All of SE Wisconsin. My daughter uses it all the time to fly back home and is inexpensive for Marquette students.

PS- My daughter purchased BB tickets for around $85 for the season and she has had so much fun attending games. She would highly recommend.

You can't imagine how happy I was to see this post. I have been hoping to pick the brain of a current Marquette student mom. or dad. son2 wants to go there so badly, but I just don't see how anyone can afford it. He has the Ignatius and Magis, a wonderful start, and is working on all other scholarships, but there is still a lot left over. Any insights would be a Godsend.

Not sure if I can offer much help here. We were excited about the amount of merit money she received, amounts to $60,000 over 4 years. We did not come out for the scholarship competitions because at that point she wasn't sure if she was going to accept at Marquette or our state university. There are lots of scholarships offered by Marquette, she just didn't qualify for others. It does leave a hefty bill to pay in the end (thankfully we had started saving early in her life) but I think she made the right decision and will come out with a bit of a loan to deal with.

I know that I had searched these boards for info on Marquette and wished there was more there. I'm glad to answer questions if I can.
