Marquette or St. Thomas

My daughter has been accepted at University of St. Thomas in St. Paul with a $14,000 4 year scholarship and Marquette University - with no word of aid yet. She's looking at career in medical field - any thoughts on which would be better school?

If she gets merit money at MU and the playing field levels out financially, what school is a better fit for her?

Would she be OOS at both? What other things is she looking for in her choice of undergrad schools?

A career in the medical field is a fairly broad statement. MU has a nursing program, PT program and Dental School with all that it offers including a degree in Dental hygiene. MU has always been a very good school in prepping people for med school.

There are numerous threads about “which is better ?” in the pre-med forums here on CC.

[Pre-Med Topics - College Confidential](Pre-Med Topics - College Confidential Forums)

Ultimately when all else appears equal it always comes back to “fit” because it has been shown that students will do better academically when they are happy with the school they attend. What happens AFTER classes end each day is very important to this happiness. When it comes to med school admission if that is what is being contemplated here it’s about five things: GPA, SCIENCE GPA, MCAT scores, medically related ECs, and letters of recommendation.

How is the pre med advising at both schools? Is their a pre-med committee at either that is responsible for screening applicants and writing letters of recommendation? You see there are a lot more variables than might appear on the surface. You should be able to learn many of these things on websites but a call to admissions can help fill in the blanks as well.

You haven’t given us more to comment on that would be anything more than an opinion; please share more so we can try to help.

Incidentally, my S is a second year med student so I have already been through this and hopefully can shed some real world experience.

Don’t know if you are from the Twin Cities area, in which case this wouldn’t apply –
but I kids at St. Thomas and it is a very nice school but much more a “local” school than Marquette. Yes, Marquette draws heavily from Chicago and Wisconsin, but it also draws from Jesuit high schools all across the country. Also, 95% of Marquette freshmen live on campus while I think the percentage is lower at St. Thomas (hence, more commuters.)
Wishing your daughter luck with her decisions!

Agree with dbwes on the local nature of St. Thomas. I suspect 90% of the students are from MN, and 70% from the Twin Cities.

As eadad intimated, a general comparison of the two at this stage of the game doesn’t make much sense. I’d evaluate your daughter’s specific program at the two schools, head to head. And visit them both so she can get a feel. They are quite different.

I currently attend UST and I agree with all the threads above. My class is nearly all commuters. My roomate as a matter of fact knows just about everyone-- making things awkward. On move in day, it appeared that everyone already had their relationships. St. Thomas, however, is a BEAUTIFUL school-- much more so than Marquette. If you are very outgoing or don’t care about the social aspect too much, St. Thomas is great. If you want to meet new people that are on the same boat as you and looking for people to meet, Marquette is wonderful; and it is academically superior from a nationwide standpoint.

As a Twin Cities resident, and Marquette alum - there is no question that Marquette is a better choice. Bigger school, more challenging and highly rated academically and I think a better representative of the true college experience. Marquette has $$ to give - if they don’t offer it at first, ask for it. ;-)
