Marquis Scholars Day

Anyone going to the Marquis Scholars Day tomorrow at Lafayette?

JJS88,

I'll be there as an "Admissions Ambassador", and will be leading one of the 8:30am! tours tomorrow from the Williams Center for the Arts.

I'll also be at lunch in the Kirby Sports Center at noon. Free food is good!

I might not make it to Lafayette in time for the campus tour, but I'm going to try to get there by 9:00am to attend a class. I went on a tour when I visited during the summer.

Is this program very organized or is it more of a attend what you want type of thing?

JJS88,

Although I am not exactly sure of the day's itinerary, I do know that different events have been set up for the Scholars (early morning tour, student panel, lunch, etc). I also know that these types of admissions programs usually set aside some time for prospective students to attend a class of two.

You could really do anything you wanted throughout the day. Your job is to get a feel for the college, and you can do that however you'd like. You could spend some time relaxing in the Farinon College Center speaking with current students. You could check out the Kirby Sports Center if you are into athletics or fitness. I'm sure admissions officers will be available to answer any lingering questions, as well.

Most importantly...enjoy the day! It looks like we're in for some beautiful weather tomorrow.

Would you be willing to share your experiences after attending Friday's Marquis Scholars Day?

I'm sure people would be interested!

Friday was a beautiful day for our Marquis Day visit. The whole campus (admin., faculty, students) was welcoming and helpful. My s was impressed enough to move Lafayette ahead of the school that is giving him a full ride. That's the overall impression and results. Now a bit more details.

We arrived just in time to take in lectures at 9 a.m. We went to different lectures. He attended some mech. eng. course and I went to an eng prof and ethics course. He felt he would be able to enjoy the course and do well. 'My' professor took time to explain the course afterwards. Too bad I wanted to return to the student panel and gave up listening to her conversation with a student who had a question.

The students (all Marquis Scholars, of course) on the panel were from the spectrum of the Lafayette academic offering and seniority. They were all very articulate and were able to answer questions in good enough details to give me a sense that my s would really be able to thrive at Lafayette. I wished there was more time for Q&A but we did get more Q&A at a more personal level during the lunch period.

After the panel session we took the departmental tour with one of the eng faculty members. He took us through the engineering facilities and answered more specific questions about the department. I like the fact that the school/department/major is small enough that one professor is assigned to advise and stay with an incoming class of students for the entire 4 year. Since there were only two families on the tour that morning we were able to ask questions to our heart's content.

Then we met more students, staff and faculty at lunch. (Good lunch fare - sandwiches, pasta salad, green salad, chips, cookies & brownies, drinks) They set up tables identified for different intended majors. We sat at one of the engineering tables and talked with whoever happened to sat down with us. We met some chem eng and civil eng students. I chatted with a professor and an admission officers. I wouldn't have minded more time to sit and talk with professors from other disciplines but there were classes to teach and attend.

Lunch was in the gym and you can see the new stadium facilities on the way. When we visited over the summer the field house and stands were under construction. Now it is almost done and it is a good looking addition to the campus.

After lunch we went onto another 2 sets of lectures and I, with some reluctance, skipped the panel discussion on the student support services (career, pre-professional advising). There were too many interesting courses that we wanted to sit in on that day. My son attended a eng/math class and I sat in on a physics of music class for non-majors. Then we both sat in on a VAST class led by a liberal arts professor. Again, we were able to ask questions and have discussions with the faculty. Students were much less likely to initiate conversations.

BTW, they gave out a list of the courses we could sit in on for the various time slots when you register in the morning.

We finished the day at around 3 p.m. and met the admissions counselor who interview my s last summer. She remembered my son and his interests (amazing), specifically in African hand drumming and steered us to visit the music department before we left. We stopped in and mentioned that my s was checking in on drumming activities on campus and the secretary immediately suggested that we talk to the dept chair who is interested in world music and drumming. As she was getting his business card for us, he returned from his run/workout in the gym. We chatted for a bit before we headed on the road home.

On the whole, we are impressed. Since my son is not one to gush over things, it says a lot that he said he would be willing to give up a full ride scholarship from one of his acceptances for Lafayette. I wish we had been able to spend more time on campus or arranged for an overnight for my s. However, everyone on campus is so open and welcoming (we have collected quite a few business cards and email addresses from faculty) that we feel we can just call up/email any one and get an answer.

Hope we hear about the experiences (good and bad) from those who attend the Monday session.

BandW,

That's a great post! Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed thoughts and experiences.

See you tomorrow morning. I think I will want to go to classes which I didn't have a chance to do on my other campus visit. Any chance you could show us other dorm rooms other than yours which by the way was immaculate. Interested in the Kamen(?) new dorm.
