Marshall Acceptees: Global Leadership Program?

For those of you who have already gotten your acceptance letters to Marshall--was there any information in your packet regarding the Global Leadership Program? I was just wondering if all those invitations have already been sent out among the people who qualified for scholarships or if they're going to send those invitations separate from acceptance letters...?

Or if you're a current Marshall student--how do the GLP invitations work? Any idea on how many people are selected?

Last year the GLP invitation came on it’s own after acceptance but before the commitment deadline – early April, I think. The letter said the offer was extended to the top 10% of business admits.

Yup, GLP and LINC letters both come out after acceptance, but before commitment in May. The top 10%, about 200 students, business admits are invited to GLP.

As a Presidential scholarship candidate, I received the GLP packet during Explore USC.

Does joining GLP have any advantages aside from going to China? Does it give you an edge in your future college years?

From the website:
“The Global Leadership Program is open by invitation to the most academically talented students in each incoming Freshmen class. These students form their own cohort, take the Freshmen Leadership and Global Leadership seminars their first year, and have access to many exciting opportunities including visiting international businesses locally and abroad, job shadowing, and priority access to our three joint programs.”

The freshman seminars are pass/no pass lectures from leaders in various fields talking about how they chose their career paths, etc. Good for getting a grasp on the business world before choosing an emphasis. The only downside I see is the cost of the trip (and there are some need-based scholarships available for that).

It is completely worth it, as is the cost of the trip. Its 2 hours on fridays with a short write up about the previous weeks speaker due each week. The first half is all guest speakers who are successful USC grads in the business world. And the dean teaches the class so it gives you a connection with him. Second semester focuses on learning about the culture of china and preparing for the trip during spring break.

A few quick questions on GLP:

1) If you are currently in the freshman leadership program (fall semester) and have registered into the GLP for spring semester, do you get into the GLP program automatically?
2) If you are not currently in the freshman leadership program (fall semester) but would like to register into the GLP program for spring semester, what do you need to do?
3) Can only Marshall school students register into the GLP program?
4) For the GLP springbreak trip, do parents need to pay for the trip cost?

Thanks!

The GLP program is essentially 2 2-credit courses–one each semester. If you in the first semester class, freshman leadership seminar, then you are a part of GLP. You do not have to take the course second semester but then you don’t get to go on the trip to China. But i guess since you were invited to the program, you can still be part of “GLP” even though you don’t go on the trip or take the course. I am not too clear on this though.

GLP is invite only, so if you weren’t invited, you can’t join. Although the LINC program is essentially the same thing as GLP with more locations and is arguably better than GLP for that reason. GLP, you are limited to Beijing or Shanghai. LINC you apply during your first semester (i think right about now-ish).
To answer you question, i don’t think you can take second semester class if you didn’t take the first semester class.

Yes. unfortunately. It costs $2450, but includes airfare, hotel, transportation in china, and some/most meals (not personal expense and some meals). “Limited amount of scholarships”, i am applying for them now–all need based. I cannot be sure how generous they are with these scholarships but we will see. i will actually find out how much i will get on the 29th, just pm if you want to know how much/what my financial aid was.

Other notes:
Selection for GLP is primarily, if not solely, based on SAT scores. I don’t know the cut off score, but pm me if you want to know my score.
As for edges, I guess it is something you can put on your resume-- mention it is invite on, which kinda makes it prestigious, but not really too much. There are maybe 100-110 students in GLP, so it is not as prestigious as one might think, but it still puts you in the top 15-20% of the class?

Also, there are about 20 internships available only to GLP students. It is a 10 week internship program in China (usually Shanghai, sometimes Beijing). They give you a stipend to cover costs (i hear if you use it frugally, you can even end up making some money). The caveat is that you have to apply for them amongst GLP students-- maybe 60-80 students (idk, varies) apply for them. So not everyone will get it.
