What's up with the new BusinessWeek rankings?? They rank USC number 36 in the nation! I think it's better than that!! Any thoughts...

The USNews Ranking of Undergraduate Business Schools ranks USC as number 10 in the country which is good.

USnews rankings are much much more reputable than the businessweek rankings because businessweek focuses too much on a peer survey and on arbitrary factors such as facilities)

In addition, businessweek has USC in the top 15-20 for starting salary which is the most important factor in my opinion

Just a note - getting into this whole rankings business is a messy deal but due to the fact “prestige” (however elitist this may sound) plays a large role in the business world I guess we (prospective business undergrads) have no other choice…

I wouldnt say Business week is bad or is completely useless but their rankings are far from understandable. Last I heard Notre Dame Mendoza ( a good school of course) was ranked higher than MIT Sloan as well as Upenn Wharton. Brigham Young and Emory - two schools while being phenomenal schools have a problem placing grads in IBs and other major positions - were both ranked higher than NYU Stern - arguably (I said ARGUABLY so dont kill me XD) the best Wall Street/Finance feeder schools. UT McCombs - 7th in U.S news was beaten out by Boston college ( Carrey). I believe Marshall (USC), Tepper (Carnegie Mellon), McDonough (georgetown) were out ranked by

Babson - virtually unheard of outside of their amazing Entrep program

Richmond - pardon my unreasonable ignorance but I dont think ( and I may be completely off base) but this might not even be a target school for major recruiters

Miami U - great school but there is little chance it has the alumni network or career services of a CMU or a USC

So if you are scared that BW has ranked USC low and as a result it slightly takes away credibility from USC …dont be. BW has managed to misplace ( in my opinion) nearly every top ranked school in the nation. Furthermore, know that several other USNWR top ten schools ( CMU included) were thrown out of the top twenty by BW. In my humble opinion I dont think its that BW is wrong but rather they weight certain criteria heavily and are lax on others. I think the main difference must be job placement. I find it hard to believe that Boston College, Miami U or URichmond student has a significantly higher chance or significantly better education for that matter ( I say significant because these three schools are 7 -10 places ahead of Marshall) than a USC/CMU/G’town grad.

Then again all this is just speculation. I know for a fact Marshall gives its students a phenomenal undergraduate education and I know that those who put the effort in during their time in USC end up exactly where they want to be at the end of their four years.
