Mary Markley Hall

I was assigned Markley for next year as a freshman and I was just wondering if anyone could comment on the size of the rooms or just about the dorm in general and what to expect in the fall!

Rooms are probably the smallest on campus (12x12 or so). Pretty social dorm with its own cafeteria and the Hideaway grill on the 1st floor. Decent walk to central campus but you can take a bus if you are really lazy! You will have a good time, just make sure to keep up with the school work.

Bumper is pretty accurate. Rooms range from 12x9 to 12x11 for the doubles. The dorm is old and starting to deteriorate (ie. Showers are from 1963…), but it’s definitely the most cozy of all dorms and you shouldn’t have a problem meeting people. Community showers don’t suck that bad, dining hall is not one of the worst and you have some consistency in the salad bar and make-your-own-pizza. Hideaway is awesome (cafe in the basement), great place to hang out and eat pretty good food as well as stock up on the basics (ramen, pop, gum, etc).

It is the most social of the dorms and a lot of kids end up joining greek life in one way or another. Close to South U which is a plus but the farthest dorm on central from classes (Take the bus! Commuter South from Markley is awesome and saves on a long walk).

Not sure what else there is to say, I enjoyed it there.

I had an 8x10 double in my freshman year… so yea rooms can be really small

With rare exception, the rooms are all the same size 11.5 x 12 plus the closet. The rooms were designed to fit the furniture that was in the dorm in earlier years (a desk against the window, a twin bed and a dresser fit snuggly along each side of the room).

It’s easy to meet people there.

It isn’t close to anything except the arb but I was able to walk everywhere I needed to go.

what type of room do you have in markley? it seems as if you’re second guessing markley… im dying to be in it because i know a lot of people assigned there and it would give me comfort for freshman year… i know this isn’t any good advertisement but im currently in a double in bursley and if you’re worried about the room size… bursley rooms are much bigger! let me know if you’ll think about switching!

*bursley rooms aren’t much bigger actually. but yeah, most people are pretty happy with markley. at a big school like this you pretty much have to walk everywhere anyway, and you’re a freshman so location doesnt get much better. you’ll like markley (and bursley is pretty good too, umich2016student. if I were you I wouldnt try to switch. just make the best of it and meet people. the buses are not bad at all).

Being that close to the arb will be great! Take advantage of that!
