Mason School of Business

Hi, I'm a recently admitted sophomore transfer.

While I know I wouldn't apply to the program until Spring 2015, I'm concerned as to how selective it is. Getting accepted to W&M is literally a dream come true for me, but I'm extremely passionate about pursuing a marketing degree. That's what I declared at my current university, so the prereqs aren't a problem...I'll just continue pre-reqs as a sophomore at W&M. I know it's based on GPA, and I'm a strong believer in working hard. There's just a tiny part of me that's afraid that I'll try my best, have a 3.5 or so, and still not get in.

Is there an average GPA that anyone knows of accepted business majors? I think I read on the website that the admit rate is 53%. How many of those people that weren't admitted just weren't qualified?

I wouldn’t really worry about it if you know W&M is where you want to be. If you have a 3.5, you will be guaranteed to get in for the Fall of 2016. The GPA cut-off for the Fall cohort is usually around a 3.2, I think. For Spring cohort it is usually higher around a 3.4 or so. The cut-off obviously varies depending on the GPA of the applicants applying but it’s not likely that you’re going to have 225 kids with GPAs above a 3.5 applying to the business school.

Regardless your GPA (if it is ~3.5) will get you in. You also have to keep in mind that, as a transfer, you already have a year of college grades under your belt and would only be adding one semester of grades (Fall 2014) before you apply in Spring 2015. So, if your GPA is already substantially over the cut-off, you can take comfort in the fact that you would really have to mess up your first semester at W&M to bring your GPA down below the ~3.2 cut-off.

I thought transfer credit only brought the hours, not the GPA? I am sure that is the way it is for students who took a course at another university but are full time W&M from the beginning, so maybe it is different for transfers. But I would check on that before counting on that.

Transfer students do not transfer grades, just courses/credits.
