I was going to apply to Massachusetts school or Art and Design, and was wondering will a strong GPA (3.7) and SAT scores (1880) help me in admissions, or is it mostly based on your portfolio. Also i took an extra art class in school (low level though b/c that’s all by school offers) but i was never able to join the after school clubs because of my work schedule will this count against me? Do i need to have a recommendation from an art teacher, or will the subject teacher recommendations be fine? Also in the portfolio, are they looking more for skill/technique or creativity?
My son took several summer courses at MassArt and applied there as his safety school 2 yrs agao(too close to home). Try and find some stats on the current freshman class @ MassArt - avg. GPA, test scores, etc. to see how you compare. From what I can remember the focus is more on your portfolio than anything else. My son only had 1 extracurricular in hs so I wouldn’t worry about not being in any clubs - having a job counts just as much. A lot of what schools want in a portfolio is drawing from observation. If you have some creative pieces from your art class that you’d like to include then by all means do so.
