Massive Aspirations, but still... Chance Me!!

Latitude - He did not score a 2140 on the SAT I, he added up his three scores on SAT II exams. I am not sure why he did that.

I find it odd that you had such a drop off of the schools you applied to. No middle ground. Ivies and ivy-equivalents and then… GA Tech and Stevens? What about all the great engineering schools in between?

GA Tech…IS pretty cool iman… But seriously isn’t that his SAT1 score???

By the way, I got the info about the other schools he applied to from the thread that Orchid pointed out.

Quiver - Nope, those are just his three SAT II scores added together, unless I misunderstood. The addition is correct, and it is under the category SAT II though…

mtguy1 - our high school organized a trekking expedition to the Himalayas… the smaller mountains not Mt Everest, and I, being school headboy was chosen to lead a group of 10 people… seriously, is it that hard to understand?? and by BS-ey if you mean below standard-ey, then I do understand that they are not what you would call “good for the Ivy League schools”, and if BS means something else, then I am unaware of what you mean… killforstern and latitude123 thanks for the review guys… iman123194 and all of the others… that is my SAT !! score, i think I made it pretty clear in the question itself… and I know they are way low… I just want to know whether I am a fool to apply to these universities or whether I actually stand a chance… and I dont know how many times I have been asked this, but I want to go to the corporate side after post grad, and that would be really tough if I attend some hardcore engineering college, my idea is that I attend a college which teaches engineering, but with a lighter approach, keeping the doors open for an MBA afterwards… and I really couldnt find schools better than the Ivies to fulfil my desire…

^^ SAT II not SAT !!.. sorry for the typo…

You have a corporate branch to most tech schools also…MIT is perfect examle

Ok, so you and your high school went on a walk and you were chosen as the “head.” That doesn’t mean that you actually guided the other students anywhere, and it hardly deserves mention at all. What you’re doing is playing games. “Guiding people through the Himalayas” sounds impressive to the unsuspecting person. If you’re that vague, for all they know, you are guiding tourists up Himalayan peaks. What you’re actually doing is going for a hike on a field-trip and writing that down as an EC to be deceptive. That’s like me writing “lead physics group at amusement park” down as an EC when the physics department organized the trip as a lab.

English is likely not your first language, so I should have been more clear. BS = bulls…

mtguy1 - dude… The school organized it with the help of a well recognized organization… they dont give everyone permission to climb the Himalayas… I got a medal and an appreciation certificate which clearly states that I lead the group… and if you think climbing even on the smallest mountain of the Himalayan Range is as easy as taking a stroll in the park then probably your brain is taking a stroll in some park without your body… as for BS=bulls, I dont think it harms my English vocabulary if I dont know some words that are not even mentioned in the dictionary…here in India we just call it “fake” instead of this bulls crap…and just for the record… my EC is neither fake, nor “bulls”…

I have climbed (likely much more) difficult scrambles for personal enjoyment, and I didn’t even think of writing that down as an “EC.” It’s the mentality that upsets me. Do whatever you want.

mtguy1 - what I am saying is that when a well known organization tells you to lead 10 people to climbing a mountain with a map and no guide to help you, It is not personal enjoyment… have you climbed a mountain about 4000 mt high without a guides help?? If yes, then it is an achievement and deserves a mention in your Resume, if not, and pardon me for sounding rude, but then you don’t have the right to judge my mentality if you haven’t done something like that yourself… I don’t know if you are aware of this phrase, but it would be the case of sour grapes…

I am just a [kind?] cc-er who has decided to volunteer my 5-10 minutes to take the time and provide honest feedback. as are most of the posters here.
we (at least, I can speak for myself) are not looking for a fight. we are trying to provide u with honest feedback.
so please try not to be offended by posts that appear harsh - they r ultimately for ur own benefit, so that u dont make the same mistakes when you report info to colleges. end of lecture. =)

back to the point of this thread…
at least for me, one thing i find is that your post is extremely vague.
it constantly says “various awards”, and “many” and several other vague awards.
for the sake of accurate posts, i would advise you to here, and on your apps 4 colleges:

1) indicate how you placed and clarify. be clear - adcoms dont have time to search for the info. ex: IMO qualifier. USAChO finalist. USABO semifinalist (whatever the equivalent is for india). please be clear. i dont know how else to stress that. if u arent clear, adcoms will think ur merely resume padding - they werent born yesterday.

2) if you don’t like climbing mountains, i suggest you dont list that as an EC. cause colleges may see through that - either in the interview, recs, etc. instead, fill the space with more substantial activities that U enjoy - dont just do it for the leadership checkbox.

3) you seem to be an awesome sports player! indicate your role in the team, what tournaments u/ur team has won, and elaborate (since people not from ur country may not know what they mean - and if we dont, it’s possible adcoms dont either. just sayin’).

4) standardized testing will be critical. especially for internationals. when other CCers say that your score is low, they arent saying that to offend you. it’s true that compared to the average accepted applicant to many of your schools, it’s much lower. that said, dont lose hope. but dont bet on ur ECs to pull u up UNLESS u clarify those ECs. and, the reason SATs/ACTs are so important is because that’s the first way to compare u to the american applicant pool, with which they are much more familiar.

5) since you are an international, although other people may disagree with me, i think u should ONLY apply to american schools u are truly interested in. if it’s HYPSMC or the ivies, so be it. but if you don’t like certain state schools in the US, dont apply there. ur just wasting ur time/money. what i mean is, only if u really wanna move to the US more than anything else, apply to US safety schools. in other words, apply to safety (and match and reach too) schools in ur OWN country - it will save u money, time, and effort.

6) that said, u should also consider taking the JEE. if olympiads have been ur friends, and math and physics and chem are ur thing, then u will do just fine.

phew… lots to say. hope it enlightened u a bit. =)
and remember, tho we try to share our knowledge and help u out, some of us are also only the same as u at the end of the day - blind to the admissions process.

Hey guys… so I got into GeorgiaTech, UMich, and Brown (that is where I’m going)… Thanks for ur help everyone…!! Anyone with me at Brown???

Go to BITS Pilani.

Knockaround - The total point of applying to universities abroad was that I shouldnt need to apply to colleges in India… u c academics has never been my strong hand, and in India, thats the only thing they look for… you appear for 1 entrance test and you get selected/rejected… that is a stupid way of judging a student’s caliber… moreover, the questions are multiple choice… I took the Indian joint entrance test this year and marked answers without even reading the question (I took a chance on all the 90 questions I solved), and I am scoring 225 out of a possible score of 360 ( I am possibly among the top 5000 students from the total of 1.2 million applicants), and believe me or not, I did not study for even 1 second… If I wanted to stay in India, I could’ve, but I am very much against this system, so you will see me at Brown University following this fall… Adios!!!
