D is in the same situation as Amy - accepted to UPitt and Honors College, and invited to apply for the Med School Guaranteed admit program. The e-mail mentions a scholarship, but we haven’t received anything by mail yet. Here are her stats:

State: TX
SAT: 1550/2350 (CR-800, M-750, W-800)
GPA: 3.98/5.45
Rank: 5/~650+
Essays: Good (we think)
Teacher Recs: Very good (we believe)
Hook (if any): Siemens National semi-finalist
School Type: Public

It looks like the honors college is attracting some pretty high caliber students, with good scholarship opportunities. Can anyone comment on the engineering program or refer me to some helpful info? My son was done with all his apps… but perhaps we should consider one more.

He is a National Merit Semifinalist. Oklahoma has a good scholarship deal, but that did not appeal to him. Northeastern is our financial safety (assuming he makes NMF).

Have done considerable research into Pitt Engineering. My son applied based on an avalanche of invites he was sent and was accepted with a full tuition and decent engineering honors scholarships so Pitt went from off the radar to a decent option. The engineering program seems solid. I spoke to the engineering freshman coordinator and all the information I received was good. There are about 2000 engineering students. Go to the website, Pitt.edu, and check out engineering as well as the Honors College. The scholarships are quantitatively based…I think if SAT’s are 1400/1600 and GPA is 3.5 then the higher amounts come into play. There is not much time left to apply though and who knows how long scholarship money will last.

S received $2k/yr notice and encouraged to apply for Chancellor’s.
3.8 UW/4.8 W
2330

Pitt is his safety- although if he were lucky enough to get into the guaranteed med school program I would hold a pistol to his back and make him go. Not sure when notices go out re: consideration for that.

There is no guarantee that if you have amazing stats you will get the full tuition. I am sure they are getting tons of applicants with amazing stats since their reputation of giving out scholarships based on merit only is spreading among students/high schools. You can only apply and hope for the best :)

Amount of Scholarship: Full tuition already awarded; invited to apply for Chancellor’s Scholarship

State: Poor, rural, underrepresented.
SAT: 800CR 760M 780W
ACT: 35
GPA: 3.55 UW (School does not weight.)
Rank: School does not rank.
Essays: Verbiage a little stilted, but otherwise very good. Tend to be very high-minded, but don’t flow very well.
Teacher Recs: Very strong on potential, but weak on ability to complete work on-time.
Ec’s: Floor Leader (advisor to underclassmen, planning activities, etc.), Model UN (Outstanding Delegate at State), Swing Dancing Club (Co-President), Theater (singing part in school play), Quiz Bowl (all-state), University research last summer, entering project into ISEF this Spring.
Hook (if any): None, except possibly location, if they care about geographic diversity.
Location/Person:
School Type: Residential math/science magnet.
Gender: Male
Other Factors: SAT-II: 800 World Hist, 800 Physics, 770 Math Level 2, AP tests: three 5’s and two 4’s
General Comments: Very hard curriculum, but worst grades tend to be in easier, boring classes, especially 9th and 10th grade. Other kids from his school have won Chancellor’s in the past few years with better grades but lower test scores.

We are really excited about Pitt. If my son is invited to interview for the Chancellor’s, we will definitely make the trip, and there’s an excellent chance he’ll accept if offered. Good luck to everyone else in the same boat!

Yes, we are in state. With tuition benefits (TG- after 20+years finally pay off), tuition would be 0. So if S were to go, the $2k would be used for R&B. D only got $500, so he’s come up in the world.
I really like the city, and the med research opportunities are outstanding.

Yeah dufay, I agree that the medical research facilities are outstanding. UPMC and Pitt’s medical school are highly regarded with good reason and are right on campus.

^ And UPMC’s association with the School of Nursing makes the program heaven for nurses-to-be. Not that I am biased or anything in that I completely want to attend :)

The wait is over…
