<p>In many cases the common usage of a named SOM or college is interchangeable with the parent institution's name within this forum. People in performance, music think Jacobs even if a poster references Indiana U. Seems to me to make sense to bracket the music school name as an additional identifier for the list purpose in identifying a named music component within an institution. Same thing with CCM.</p>
<p>It's the factor of a specific named entity, a founder or a major donor, or in the case of CCM a common usage, rather than a generic descriptive such as Podunk U's College of Music, State U's Dept of Music, or State of Confusion's School of Music.</p>

<p>I love the Magic Flute. My older son, now 25, was a boy soprano and he was tapped to play the top voice in the Belgian National Opera Production so many years ago. It was a top production with amazing soloists (he sang one scene with Maria Shaeffer). He also sang the little boy Ynolde in Pelleas & Melissande there. It was an exciting experience. While he's no longer a singer, I can really relate to the parents of singers and what the experience is like. I must say that the world of instrumentalists, as cut throat as it is, does not come close to the netherworlds of the opera. I wish you all luck picking your way through the thorns. We had a son who was so talented that noone could really compete, but even so, many traps were planted in his 11-year-old path which we as parents were required to clear for him. Good luck to all of you!!!</p>

<p>In looking at the names, I think Eastman stands out in that the proper list name should be:</p>
<p>U Rochester [Eastman]</p>
<p>However, I can appreciate that almost everyone talks about them as Eastman. In contrast, I think most people refer to IU Bloomington as Indiana, and not as Jacobs.</p>
<p>My experience with CCM is even different. I have thought of CCM as "Cincinnati Conservatory of Music". But I believe it is really "College - Conservatory of Music", University of Cincinnati. I think the proper listing for CCM should be "U Cincinnati Con" with "Con" implying admissions to the CCM program, not just to U of Cincinnati.</p>
<p>Finally, Julliard is technically "Julliard School". If we include U's and C's in everyone's name, then "school" should be in Julliard's name.</p>
<p>Note: Other than Cincinnati, I am not advocating for any changes to the list. I think using the common name (Eastman, Julliard) is just fine. I'm just pointing out nits for when someone says "we do it that way because that's the school's name" (adjusted for the abbreviation convention). In Eastman's and Julliard's cases, we are not using their proper name.</p>

<p>Juilliard is actually "The Juilliard School" - but Juilliard seems to be recognizable all by itself.</p>

<p>If we really want to pick those nits, then Peabody would be "The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University" and that is too much of a mouthful even for me. Somehow, Johns Hopkins U [Peabody] does not seem right because the two schools do not seem all that tightly bound, with separate campuses and almost completely separate administrative staffs. Similarly with Eastman and U Rochester. In the other cases, the music schools seem to be more a part of the general operation.</p>
<p>On their website, that school in Ohio calls itself the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Three types of schools for the price of one. With our standard abbreviations, I think "U Cincinnati C Con Music" is the way it should come out, but I also see the merit of violadad's distinction and would not object if he wants to change things back the other way.</p>

<p>I think the major purposes of this list are two-fold:</p>

<p>My assessment is that answering a "where did you apply" question a music student will answer Eastman, Oberlin, Juilliard, Hartt, or CCM, Jacobs, but will say UMichigan (not UMich SOM). and probably say Shenandoah, not Shenandoah Conservatory, or Appalachian State, not Hayes. That to me is the distinction. </p>
<p>Certain conventions are necessary in trying to assemble the list, and some are judgement calls, like my original UCincy [CCM] input.</p>
<p>I erred in the update of kmccrindle's Son's addition; I see the original U Cincinnati [CCM] as being within the agreed format. Let it stand as corrected. I be flexible.</p>
<p>I have also been known to on occasion misspell Juilliard.</p>
