Master List of Scholarship Awards (Class of '11)

D's friends who are waiting to hear about scholarships from U of M didn't think they would hear until 3/1. I hope those who haven't heard yet aren't out of luck!

Kelsmom,

I had been told by the LSA scholarship office the big LSA ones, Shipman, Bentley and Dean's - have all been awarded.

But that's just LSA. There are many others, like the Stamp, which may come from other schools.

Every time I have been curious I've just looked up the scholarship office number on the website and called. They've always been very helpful.

I'll be looking forward to hearing about your Campus Day visit fredmar.

I'll be sure to report SBDad, we're going on the 5th.

Am I being arrogant?
I just got my scholarship offer from SMU and it's $7,500 per year. On their list of scholarships, this appears to be tantamount to little more than a 'tuition discount.'
I scored 2330 on the SAT, have a 4.2 GPA, lots of ECs, AP courses, service hours, class officer and rank in the top four or five of my class.
Our college counselor had privately told my parents that he expected I would get at least a half-tuition scholarship from SMU.
I'm disappointed because I really might have gone to SMU if it was affordable. Now I hate the school.
(I apologize if this sounds arrogant).

uzbek, you may have run into the scholarship version of what is known as "Tufts syndrome" in admissions speak. IOW if you didn't convince them you really wanted to be there and would come if the award made it feasible, they are unlikely to show you love in return.

This happened to my D at two schools . One because she rescheduled a scholarship weekend to attend another school's function that they would not move, and another because she was a day (and some) to the weekend. It actually happened a third time, now that I think about it, and that one was just odd.

At one and three they raised their offers when D called them and said that she was going to have to drop them from consideration and the conversation turned to the low-ball offer. In both instances they upped the offer. In both instances she had a very good relationship with the adcom. Number two never budged (even though she felt closest to that adcom) and said "thanks for playing our game." LOL.

So, 2/3 means it's worth a try. Good luck.

I'm sorry , uzbek. I should explain. Like you my D was applying to schools where her scores, rank, and GPA put her well into the top 1% of applicants. Again, like you her scores were 200 or more points above their mean score out of 1600. That's why I'm using her situation as a guide. They needed to be convinced they weren't being played and that her interest was real, even though we had some personal contact with each school.

uzbek, my neighbor's D is a sr. at SMU. Her aid has been phenomenal. Family is not poor, but not able to handle the costs by a long-shot. SMU has really come through ... some need/some merit. Her stats were nowhere near yours (I mean, NOWHERE near). I really think it would be a good idea to talk to your admissions rep. Maybe they don't think you are serious. You are a terrific "catch" for them, but they may not want to offer it if they think you'll simply add that to your list of awards & move on to a "better" school. You are definitely on the top end of the pool of applicants. If you truly would like to go there, talk to them. It's worth a try!

uzbek21, check out my post on the SMU sad day thread.

Thanks to everybody who has responded.

I woke up this morning determined not to dwell upon anything related to SMU. I feel better already. I mean, it's not that good of a school.
I need to see what the April 1st mail brings.

I feel as if I sorta hijacked this thread, and I didn't mean to do that.

This is a valuable message thread for many CCers. I will now slip into the shadows gracefully, so that we can resume our normally scheduled messaging.

Thanks to all who consoled me and quelled my anger at SMU. Like many of you, I figured that I would have to wait until April 1st before weighing acceptances/rejections and financial aid offers, and that's what I plan to do.

Please continue to use this thread for reporting your scholarship awards. I hope you all get full rides -- plus laptops -- to the college of your choice.

I got a full ride to Notre Dame. Four years of full tuition, room & board, plus $2500 annual stipend. My parents just about **** a brick.

"I just got the package that said I was a Joyce Scholar. For those of you who do not know, the Joyce is an all-expenses paid trip to ND for four years, including stipend, books, etc. Anyone else win it? My stats are in the official decision thread."

Cur,
I just noticed that the title of this thread just says "scholarship", even though it is intended for merit scholarships. I'll try to get the attention of a moderator to change that. However, if the people I know at my D's HS are any example....merit=financial aid, need blind=100% of need, etc., people just don't know what these terms mean and as you say, they continue to spread misinformation.

entomom, I have been googling. It appears that the Glenna Joyce Scholarship is a wonderful deal for students with need in Central Ohio to both Ohio State and ND. Many many congrats to PCB.

I edited my post entomom because I realized what PCB had done. Yes. This thread is for merit awards. It is also primarily institutional scholarships by an Individual school but I see no reason not to mention wonderful deals like this. There are other prestigious geographically limted scholarships that are dang hard to find. Delmarva peninsula kids at Swat for one, Texas kids (and a couple other states kids) at Hamilton for another.

When it comes to scholarships, remember to look for this kind of local only deal for pure merit and merit with need scholarships whether they be from an outside source or run through the school. Some have very expansive definitions of need. ;)

Google is your friend.

"I got a full ride to Notre Dame. Four years of full tuition, room & board, plus $2500 annual stipend. My parents just about **** a brick." A reasonable reaction if you ask me.

Was feeling like the only parent here whose kid languished without a scholarship offer...so Goddess bless the University of Pittsburgh and their 10K/year enticement!

^ I'd be happy with that! Congrats! :)

Goddess...?

In moments of high emotion I guess I still feel an urge to thank/beseech/revile a Higher Power. Not really sure a female one would be that random, though.

It's a great scholarship offer and we're looking forward to visiting Pitt!

HelimomNYC, congratulations. How long was the time between the acceptance and the scholarship notification?

Did your son get his acceptance around the first week of Feb?
