matches for a clueless senior?

Please give me some advice, and I'll love you forever! Or cook you some egg fried rice. :)

Short version: Asian female with excellent test scores, good grades, meh extracurriculars, vague science focus, upper middle class (cliche ack)

Asian female, large public high school with 2000 students, NJ
Class rank: probably in top 5%
3.87 UW GPA (1 B & harder classes each year), something like 5.5 W (equals 4.5 - the extra level is for low level classes)
SAT I: 2340 (800CR, 750M, 790W)
SAT II: 800 Bio, 800 Math II, 740 USH
AP: USH 5, WH 4, Stat 5, Eng Lang 5. Graduating with 7 AP courses
National Merit Semifinalist (my school's only one - Last year our semifinalist got into Yale, Harvard, Brown, and UPenn. I'm really, really hoping some of her luck rubs off on me!!)

Extracurriculars (not spectacular, I know, I didn't start liking them until later):
Science League, 10-12, tested into top 10% out of ~350 in state for Bio. Didn't get officer position because it's a popularity contest
Math League 11-12
Chem Club 11-12
School literary magazine 11-12, officer for 12th

Worked 11 hours a week at local library shelving books for last 1.7 years
volunteered at hospital this summer 12 hours a week for 7 weeks
shadowed a doctor this summer

Also, I'm sending in a supplemental art portfolio, it's definitely a good bit above average. Hoping it's enough to push me into the 'interesting' category

Possibly looking at premed, no financial needs. School location doesn't matter, size doesn't matter as long as most of the classes are fairly small/not ginormous. I'm looking at Northwestern and UPenn (fat chance) right now, and not sure where to look next.

Thanks!! :)

2340? you can aim high with your test scores but ECs might hurt. just look for a school that specializes in your major in an area you like

You need a safety. I would look at Rutgers or NJIT for that. For other schools how do you feel about LACs?

Yeah, for safeties I’m already looking at Rutgers, Temple, Drexel, etc.

LACs are fine as long as the school isn’t teeny tiny. C:

I’m trying to bet on my art as being a hook. I wonder how much the “big” uni’s will consider it. D: Here’s a sneak peak:

Anyone else want to throw out some names for me?? :)

Pitt would be a great safety, wonderful pre-med and a great honors college. Also a very urban environment in a wonderful neighborhood.

Johns Hopkins is fairly match-ish for you, along with other schools between 15-35 on USNWR.

I think Rice would be a good fit for you – great opportunities for pre-meds to do internships/research at the Texas Medical Center next to campus (largest medical complex in the world with 14 hospitals and 2 med schools).

You have some great art there. Do yourself a favor, and try to see if anyone local will be willing to showcase it and get a ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ account [You could very well win a Daily Deviation award.] Use watermarks when posting like that though, so others don’t steal your work. Maybe enter it into the state fair or something. I don’t draw on that level, but I entered a collage [my ‘art’ hobby] as was pleasantly surprised when I won an award.

You might be too, and that will help be an attractor.

With only one semifinalist, you are not at one of NJ’s more competitive schools, so the rank will be seen as low. Penn is a considerable reach, especially from NJ, but NU seems reasonable as do other schools on that level. You might consider applying there ED for a strong shot. JHU would be another good ED choice.
