Materials?

Hey folks,

Im starting college soon. I sent in my application to Bates a few weeks ago and did my interview a while back (ED I! Go Bates!) but I am wondering:

What do I need for college? I know there is a VERY large chance I wont get into Bates, but generally speaking what is everyone out there taking to college?

Or, to the people who are already there, is there anything you wish you had taken/wish you had known before starting college?

:) Just a bit nervous here! So I thought I would ask around.

Thanks,
~Matthew

I also applied ed to Bates. Why don't you think you'll get in?

It isn’t that I doubt my application, but with a probably… what? 3:10 acceptance rate normally, so I figure about 1:10 on ED? :) I’m just not counting on it as my only choice.

The only thing I can think of that I did that I would improve is phrase how I was only looking at Bates when I toured because it was my first choice, THEN I was going send other apps out, but eh!

:) My GPA isn’t as high as some other people here either, which makes me nervous! I tried to make my application show me and who I am 100% though, so I just really hope I get in, but if admissions thinks im not a good match, well... Shrug probably not where I wana spend my time or money anyway right? Im just trusting Bates' judgement on the matter now.

So you sent in your application ED too? That’s cool! Where are you from? Maybe we will see each other next year if all goes well! ;) Im from Arkansas.

What are you taking to college? Ive figured towels, fridge once I get there, some books, and a few things to remind me of home but past that I dono anything o.O! Eeek.

Best Wishes,
~Matthew

The regular acceptance rate is 27% the early decision acceptance rate is 54%. I think you'll get in because you're from Arkansa, I am sure they don't get too many applicants from there.

What is your gpa? You just have to hope for the best, Bates is the type of school that looks at your whole application.

Yep, I sent in my application ed too. I'm from Washington State.

"What are you taking to college? Ive figured towels, fridge once I get there, some books, and a few things to remind me of home but past that I dono anything o.O! Eeek."

You are way ahead of me, I am not even thinking about that. I have so much stuff, the idea of packing scares me.

54%?! Are you serious? o.O Where did you get that number. I had no idea it was that high.

My GPA is only 3.02, last time I checked. I think it went up this year slightly (3.2ish) I tried to point out that where I am the High School education isn’t what it is supposed to be. Not just HORRIBLE, but I’ve learned more out-of-class teaching the teachers than in class by far, which I think will help, but who knows? Hehe, I'm trying not to worry about it too much.

"Yep, I sent in my application ed too. I'm from Washington State. "

:) That’s so cool! I have a friend up there, she's a blast to be around. ^.^ Best of luck in getting in! Did you get an interview/see the campus at all? I have some pictures of the campus from my trip if you would like a link. (Obviously not sure if you got to go up there or not :)!) What major are you looking at taking up? I’m at a toss up between a few things, but my major interest is Sociology.

"You are way ahead of me, I am not even thinking about that. I have so much stuff, the idea of packing scares me."

Packing scares me too, :) I’m very excited though! But honestly... the only reason I’m looking for ideas is because my family wants things to get me for Christmas, but I don’t want a lot of things I cant take with me to college... so I really don’t know. Best I have is a hot pot for heating water for tea/coffee, towels/washcloths, gift cards for things like iTunes and book stores.

My friend at Bates said posters, a GOOD set of sheets/down comforter, and some things that remind you of home will get you by for a while. Everything else I think is sort of a wait-and-see deal depending on where you are going/room mates which is something that just opens up a whole new door of things to stress about! ;)

Best Wishes,
~Matthew

Hi Matthew,

Good luck in your ED app. Coming from Arkansas will definitely help you. Check out the Bates Student Handbook for some ideas on what to ask Santa for.

You can also find ED facts on admissions, etc., on this website:

Good luck! I'm applying EDII to Bates --- if I can get everything ready by Jan 1!

Hey! Nice to meet to you! ^.^

Thanks so much for those links. I guess I zoned out and didn’t even think about looking on the Bates site for ideas.

I reformatted a list I just found on the College Life forums for my website. There are lists easy to use online and 2 printable versions. I'm finding it extremely useful so maybe some other people here can use it too. Feel free to give the link to friends as well. :)
