I am going to be a freshman this upcoming fall in Wharton.

I have decided I want my concentration or "one of my concentrations" to be statistics. It says on the wharton undergraduate page that math 114 is a prerequisite. first of all, is this an absolute?

Also, i found out today i received a 5 on the calc BC exam placing me out of math 104. In this case I should go into math 114 in my first semester so that i can concentrate in stats. However, i feel like i didnt learn too much in calc bc and i didnt really master the material, and may not be able to do well in math 114 because of that. But on the other hand, i also want to avoid math 104 because of the stories and the stereotypes. so what should i do? would i be able to do well in 114 with a 5 in calc bc even though i dont remember everything.

Last question is do i go into stat 101 or stat 430? Keep in mind this will be in my first sem of college and as i also have placed out of econ 010, i can add another class into my schedule. would i be able to take stat 102, pass it, and get retroactive credit for stat 101, if i DID NOT take the stat ap test?

right now im planning to take

chinese 231
math 104 or 114
stat 101 or 430
mgmt 100
language seminar

any thoughts or advice on what route i should take? especially from current students? i appreciate it. thank you.

Start out in Math 114. If you do poorly on the first exam you can drop down to 104 no penalty (knew a kid who did this).

Do not take Stat 430 first semester. Take it in the spring at the earliest. I personally believe that you’ll be better off taking Stat 430-431 instead of 101-102. It’ll give you 2 more upper level electives and give you a better foundation (431 takes 101 and 102 into a semester and isn’t that hard). If you don’t take stat next semester, some Wharton freshmen take LGST 101, bu most take a college requirement. Stat 430 is a very tough course though and most Wharton students don’t want to go anywhere near it, instead taking 101-102.

Is there a reason that the following professors: Michael V Pimsner, Tony G Pantev, Peter A. Storm, and James B. Haglund are the only professors available for math 114 during the fall semester of 2009, and when you look up math 114 on penn course review NONE of these professors have taught the subjects in years?

any current students would know the quality of these professors?

There are four professors per semester for MATH114 (four sections of roughly 150 students each usually covers the need), and since MATH114 is a very basic intro course for these professors, nobody wants to teach it, so it’s pretty much a rotating cycle of who has to teach the course. I could be wrong about that, but that’s been my impression since I’ve been here.

ohh that would make more sense. do you have an opinion or advice on and about these professors? it seems like storm has a higher quality but they all teach different courses so it is hard to gauge their quality in math 114…

Math 116 will be tougher. If you want to be a math major I’d check it out. If you have 0 interest in a math major and are only taking 114 for a requirement, I would probably take the easier course, 114.
