math 115 v 114, and 104 v them

should i take math 115 or 114? also, although i have ap credit for ap calc bc, should i take 104 instead of taking one of the advanced courses? I'm a bio major btw.

If you have credit for 104, then definitely skip it. 114 is primarily for people in engineering and the physical sciences, so if you are not really interested in continuing in math you may want to take 115.

can I just ask what the difference is between 114 and 115?

you can find the information on the math page.

[Department of Mathematics - Course Descriptions](http://www.math.upenn.edu/ugrad/CourseDescrPage.html)

or the course registrar.

One thing to note is that if you plan to take math 240, 114 is the prerequisite. Majors which require math 240 or 260 are most engineering majors, physics, biophysics, people in Vagelos MLS, and of course math. For you as a biomajor, unless you are want to get a math minor/are interested in higher level math courses, you should probably take math 115. From the syllabus it seems that there is much less of an emphasis on vector calculus/vector functions and fields/differential equations and more of an emphasis on very basic linear algebra and probability/statistics because this is designed to be a terminal math class.

Can Freshman take Math 116? My understanding is that it is just the honors version of math 114? How much tougher are honors classes in general?

Yes you can take math 116, if you are at all thinking about majoring in math I would highly recommend it. I personally wish I had taken because I’ve heard it was a great class (math will be my second major). Honors math/science classes (I’ve taken some) go much more in depth than the regular course and are significantly more theoretical, which personally I love. For this reason, the work is more challenging and the people who take them are often incredibly smart and passionate about the subject. But if you put in the time, they are manageable and very rewarding. Easiest to Hardest would be chemistry<math<physics.
Math 116 in particular is proof based, which math 114 is not, it’s pretty much intro to real analysis, they start with the basic axioms and then go on to stuff like linear algebra, calculus/analysis.

Thanks so much Poeme! I’m a rising senior, so obviously this is all assuming I get admitted to Penn… I’m taking Multivariable Calculus this year and have always been decent at math (AMC 12, AIME,etc.). However, I plan on applying to Wharton. If I were to get in would Math 116 be too much to add to my schedule? I do love math and would like to continue taking math classes.

Just take math170. 170 > 116 > 115 > 114 > 104
