Thank you.

Which professor teaches the material better? Whose class is relatively easier?

Thank you.

Bump it up.

I enrolled into Harrington's class. I would like to know the same thing.

Harrington has a much better grade distribution on PickAProf than Scanlon.

You are right, thank you.

Take HARRINGTON for sure. (for grade, but you wont learn much)
i went to class on the first day (no one goes to lectures)
and discussions, quizzes, and homework were all OPTIONAL.

he gives midterm questions with just different numbers before exams (also applies to final) so i went to lecture like 3 times (two times before two midterms, and once before the final) and i still aced that class.. along with everyone else.

my friend who took scanlon got owned because you actually have to do a lot of work.

what do you mean by the hw and quizzes being optional? does that mean they don't grade hw or quizzes at all? or is it extra credit? and about how many times did you go to discussion then? thanks.

discussions, quizzes and homework only matter for border-line grades.. like if your getting a b+, and went to discussions, did homework and did well on quizzes, you might get bumped up to an A-.. but if you do well on exams, which is very easy to do if you go to lectures right before exam time, all those dont really matter- whether you did them or not.

i went to discussion about three times.. once on the first week, and twice to get my midterms back at discussion, but everyone left as soon as we got our exams back. :)
my gsi didnt really speak english anyway, which didnt really help in motivating me to go.

Sounds good to me.

Hey by the way, do you still have the book for that class. Can I get the Title, Author, Edition and ISBN please?

im not sure.. because i lost my text book the first week when i went to discussion.. but go to student store, and they should have it labelled "math 16b professors harrington."

or you can check out the author there and buy a used one from comegetused.com :)

do i have to get the book specifically for berkeley because the cal student store site says i need "Calculus & its Applications (V2)(CUSTOM-Univ Calif)"

where can i find it online? ive been on craigslist, amazon, and half.com but they all sell noncustom versions of the textbook T_T

Yes, you have to get it at the bookstore or from another student. I actually have one I can sell to you if you want.

i'll buy it from someone who has a used one.. if it's cheaper than neds.. lol. (i actually don't know their price)

Hi all --

I just want to say that if it's Thomas Scanlon you're talking about, he's a really good fellow, and shouldn't be hard if you know what you're doing. HOWEVER -- I confess I am commenting based on what I've heard of upper division courses he's taught. But it doesn't seem like he'd be a terror anywhere, and if anything, he'd be willing to help. The other guy may be easier, but from the word, I think Scanlon for sure will be caring as an individual + professor.

I took Scanlon for 16B, and although the lectures were kind of boring and useless the exams weren't very hard. The problems are only slightly harder than those in the book, so just study the book and quizzes.

we had class today for harrington and i thought he was a pretty harsh grader. i mean he said that the course will follow a "strict curve" where the cutoff for an A is 93%! thats hecka high!

so...this being said, is he still as easy as you guys are saying?

ditto santabanta's question. Haha he seemed like he didn't really want to be there.
"I'm not good with technology...I'm only good with this [chalk]...sometimes"

Come on guys. He did say the quizzes will be similar to the homework and the test will be similar to the practice test(Just like kokopuff2011 said), so I don't see what the worrying is about.

but what about the "strict curve"?

I don't know about you guys but I have given up on the lecture(I'm talking about Harrington's class). My GSI is pretty good so I'm just gonna depend on him to learn the material.

same............
