I'm an incoming freshman and this is what my tentative schedule looks like

Philosophy 12a - intro to logic - 4u
MCB 62 - Drugs and the Brain (discovery course) - 3u
Poly Sci 2 - intro to comp. politics - 4u
Math 1a or 1b - 4u
I'm also taking chem p at the SLC for no credit to get ready for chem 1a

I have no major yet, but I am possibly premed with a cognitive science major, but im sure that will change. I am wondering whether I should take Math 1A or 1B. I took 2 years of calculus in high school and I got a 5 on the AB test and a 4 on the BC test. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, looks like a solid schedule. I took poli sci 2 with Price last fall and it was a worthwhile class. Avoid a GSI named Fred Kim by all means. Also, I think you can move onto math 53, multivariable calculus, since you waiver out of math 1b with that AP score. Otherwise, solid schedule. I also recommend taking a sport ( .5 u ) which can really keep you in shape and is fun, and comes with a free gym membership. take care.

1B is bad news no matter when you take it, but I think you might have an easier time if you take it in the Fall because most other students in your boat would be taking 1A and then 1B in the fall, which might possibly create more competition. You could then go on to 53 in the Spring.

thanks for the replies, i just dont know how much calculus i remember since the ap test, but i think it would all come back to me. frosh in my same situation (calc ab and bc in high school), what did/are you going to do?

ahh I dunno! I'm actually tentatively pre-med too, and I believe the majority of med schools require one year of calculus in college, so that means you could either take 1a and 1b or 1b and 53 (multivariable calculus). When did you last take calculus? I took bc in my junior year and although I got a five on the ap test, I honestly don't remember anything, so I think I'm just going to take the 1a, 1b sequence, and then take 54 over the summer because differential equations are really useful.
Based on what I've read from here and ratemyprofessor.com <--my new best friend, your other classes are very do-able, so maybe it'd be best to get 1b (a yucky weeder) out of the way now. Also, since you've taken two years of calculus, you have a pretty solid foundation in calculus, and it probably will all come back to you with just a little summer review.
good luck with your decision!
