Is it recommended to skip Math 1A if you scored a 5 on the Calculus AB test or should I just take it for an easy grade?

skip it. many people think they can get an easy grade on it so they retake it but so many do that i’ve heard that it is hard to get an A

dont skip it. if you are going to take 1B might as well take 1A before it to prepare you for it. college math is so different from AP tests. you will have hard time doing in 1B without 1A

If you know the material in Math 1A well, then skip it. You will effectively gain an elective later in most cases (in the exceptions, such as applying to the UGBA major, you may need to take a more advanced math course later, but better to spend your time and tuition learning something new than repeating what you know).

You can try the Math 1A and 1B sample final exams found here to test your knowledge of the course material:

I would recommend skipping it if you have a decent knowledge of Calculus AB concepts. I decided to retake math 1A but honestly it didn’t feel like it helped prepare for 1B all that much more than if I hadn’t taken it. Mostly 1B delves deeply into integration techniques and series and new material. It’ll probably be a good idea to get the math1a/1b book (both use the same book) early and review the chapters before chapter 7, such as integration, areas, volumes, and especially limits.

I read on assist.org (I am a transfer student) that Math 1 series is highly recommended over 16 series. Can someone please explain why that is?

It depends on your major. But if you are not sure between majors with different math requirements, Math 1 is accepted everywhere Math 16 is accepted, but not the other way around.

just take 1B. I had a 5 on AP calculus, never got more than Bs in high school calculus classes, and was fine for 1B. sure I had to work a little to get my A, but it wasn’t like I was spending ten hours a week on the class or anything like that.
