Math 1B wasn’t too bad. It’s very doable if you put in the effort.

If you flat out hate/ enjoy integrating, partial differentials, and series/sequences you’ll find it difficult/ easy on the first midterm. Always remember the constant.

are you guys serious?! i got a 5 on the Calc AB test, and i’m taking Math16A because 1A is too hard i’ve heard.

if you got 5’s on AB and BC. can you take math 1a then take 53?

I got a 5 on AB and took Math1B with Reshetekin first semester of freshman year. Aced it. Do not worry if you are a strong math person. The negative comments are coming from upperclassmen who do not want your genius to skew their curve

I just want to throw in the fact that who your professor is for Math 1A and 1B really influences how hard your class is going to be. If you aced Math 1B easily with Reshetekin, does that mean you could have easily aced Math 1B with Ratner? Ratner is the reason why Math 1B is the most failed class at Berkeley since she grades on a straight scale and her exams are notoriously difficult. I remember being somewhat unhappy with my A- in Math 1A, because I chose to take Math 1A with the most difficult professor teaching at the time. I loved the class and was glad I took it, but it was no walk in the park despite the fact I got a 5 on AP Calc AB. Go read up about your professor on ratemyprof first before picking and deciding what to review for the class.

Being an FPF student, both my possible professors (Bourgoin for Math 1A or Math 1B, or Smith for just Math 1B) received great reviews. My CalSo counselors also said they were amazing teachers. I guess I’m more worried that skipping Math 1A would leave me at a disadvantage going into Math 53 since Math 1A tends to be very theoretical. I feel like I’ve got limits and derivatives down, aka material in Math 1A, and i’ve even studied some delta-epsilon proofs on my own this summer. In terms of Math 1B being harder than Math 1A, I don’t really care since whatever math class I take this semester would be my only hard class. I’m not even taking a full load of classes. Thanks again to everyone contributing to this thread and not minding me bumping it all the time. heh.

i agree ^ the teacher can make a difference in your grade. wobble wobble.

You really shouldn’t worry too much about being able to write perfect delta-epsilon proofs. Math 1A isn’t about the delta-epsilon proofs and most professors don’t expect you to know them that well. As long as you know what the definition means, that’s good enough typically.

okay so you should definitely take my advice. since you’re in FPF, TAKE MATH 1B!!! math 1b in fpf is wayy easier (i heard). I was in 1b in fpf and i thought i couldn’t handle it because i was taking a really heavy load so i took math 1a instead and it was wayyy easier than on campus. If you take 1a in FPF, you’ll be stuck with 1b spring semester with RATNER who’s the freaking hardest math 1b teacher in all of berkeley. soooo take 1b in fpf… and it shouldn’t be that bad. Make sure your integration is on point though. I’d say it’s really important

cookie4you: did you take multivar 53? How much Math 1A (outside of the material learned in Calc AB) was pertinent to the course?

you never know if ratner is the only teacher though. like borcherds taught one class. haha so nice…:)
