Seems like the general consensus is that her class is really (effing) hard but she's a great teacher.

Maybe I'm being an overconfident, arrogant freshman here, but I feel like I could do it. Passed AP Calc B/C with a 5, and I'm breezing by in Math 1A with Haiman at the moment. There are usually a homework problem or two that I will have trouble with each week, but I'm doing just fine (thanks partially to his really easy exams).

Couple that with the fact that my best academic experience ever was with a reputedly hard and brutal teacher who expected lots out of her students, and I feel like maybe I should choose Ratner over Aganagic and Borcherds.

I'm also planning on taking Chem 3A/3AL and perhaps Anthro 3AC with a seminar and/or decal on the side. I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me some feedback on whether I'm just being arrogant or if it's actually doable. And, yes, I may likely want to go to grad school, so GPA is also a concern.

This is somewhat unrelated, but since you got a 5 in AP Calc BC, why are you even doing the Math 1 series in the first place?

I might want to go to med school, so I’m taking the premed track to keep my options open.

I see. Well… I’d suggest going with your instincts. Everyone told me that Chem 3A is a killer, etc, but I know I like to push myself in chem classes, and I’m doing really well in it now.

I have no experience for math classes though (and I’m taking Math 1B next sem, hopefully under Borcherds).

you coulda just done math 16a/16b to fulfill the 1 year of math requirement, but i think you’ll be fine anyways even if you choose ratner.

My friend LOVED Ratner. Ratner doesn’t do theory and focuses on problems a lot. If you are good at mixing concepts and doing long/hard problems, then you should be fine. For her, you just have to sit down and do a boatload of problems.

Uhm…math 1b in general is just sitting down and doing a buttload of problems. You don’t need a teacher for the class really; all you need is the book and to do as many problems as you can. If you want to take Ratner, go ahead. My friends hated her because they could barely understand her as she has a rather thick accent and I would not consider that as “expecting a lot from [her] students”. When I looked at my friends’ tests, they were doable, but the curve is pretty harsh (although that too may just be something in general for 1b, because Borcherds had a pretty hard curve in the end too)
