As an incoming freshman with an intended major of Computer Science in the College of Letters and Science, I'm having trouble picking between these two classes. I would take Math 1B with Serganova but his section conflicts with my CS section.

So the first choice is to get math over with and take Math 1B in the Fall as it will be harder in Spring when all the premeds get there, but everyone is telling me to avoid Vojta at all costs.

The other choice is to take Math 1A fall semester and have Steel and most likely have an easier time. I may also get a better Math 1B professor in Spring. Thoughts?

So what exactly is more important? Getting required courses done earlier, or getting a higher GPA? I'm worrying because CS will most likely be capped next year.

If your knowledge of calculus is sufficient that Math 1B is the correct course for you, there is no reason to take Math 1A. If you do not want to take Math 1B (or H1B) this fall, then you can take some other course of interest instead of math (i.e. don’t take Math 1A) and then take Math 1B in the spring.

Alternatively, you can take CS 61AS (self-paced), allowing you to take Math 1B or H1B at the time that CS 61A is also at. It is intended for the students with the least previous CS experience (who can take it slowly over two semesters) and those with the most (who may feel that the regular CS 61A is too slow for them).

go with 1b but not with vojta. hes horrible. i made the wrong decision of not researching my professor and i got a c+ in his 1a class…im doing really well in 1b because its more about practicing problems than thinking about as much conceptual stuff as in 1a…

I’m an EECS major, and I’m having the same problem. I don’t know whether to go back to 1A, because I’m hearing bad things about Vojta…

If you know the Math 1A material (based on review of the old Math 1A final exams), do not waste a course slot on it. In that case, if you really do not want to take Math 1B due to the instructor, take some other required course or breadth requirement instead of wasting a course slot on Math 1A.
