2's safe. either choice is fine.

From your experience are courses that many freshmans enroll in much harder to get into off the waitlist?

freshmans --> freshmen

no ... why would freshman-heavy courses be any different from others? if anything, it's easier to get in because they know "x" number of people have to take "y" writing sequence, and choose class sizes accordingly.

For 20B the req book says
"2 Calculus Early Transcendentals (text+questionnaire)"

Just making sure, is it this one?
Amazon.com: Single Variable Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Volume 2: James Stewart: Books

There's so many with similar names

Author should be Jon Rogawski

authors can oftentimes author (ha) multiple editions of the same textbook. if you're a real eager beaver, you can check the ISBN with your professor ... or send him/her the amazon link too.

The used book for Math 20b I bought from UCSD student is like this book

Is it possible to enroll in a class as a backup and then drop it on the first day or second day of instruction depending on whether I get the class that I wanted without being charged?

no charge for schedule changes at this school ... once it's past the drop/change date, there's still no charge, but you'll have to go through the unhappy task of getting petitions approved.
