I'm a prospective CS major (from LSA) and I'm wondering how does Math 214 compare to Math
417 and 216 in terms of content? On the course guide, 214 is listed as linear algebra and differential equations while in the math course catalog it is simply listed as Linear Algebra.

Also in terms of difficulty how does it compare with 215 and 216? Thanks.

214 is known to be a fairly easy math course, more so than 216 at least (and far more than 215, many students struggle with calc 3). it’s called differential equations and linear algebra, but in reality has a far heavier linear algebra focus than diff eq focus so it really isn’t all too comparable to 216 as a course. if you’re going into IOE it is a requirement, but all other departments would prefer you take 216 and 217 (or 217 and 316 if you’re going into math). 417 is actually supposed to be significantly easier than 217 despite the upper level course number, and if you really plan on going into mathematics or quantitative economics 217 will be recommended over it. sorry if my information is a bit sporadic, but basically don’t take 214 unless you’re looking into IOE, and even then if you plan on doing more intense mathematics work try to take both 217 and 316 instead because they will give you far more in depth background on both linear algebra and diff eq.
