Sooo I got my AP scores today, and I got 5 on BC calculus (yay!).

Should I skip Calculus 2 with my ap credit? I heard from the math adviser that it is strongly recommended for freshmen
to take Calculus 2, but I also heard that Calc 2 is one of those classes....

What should I take, calc 2 or calc 3?

I was strong in integration and algebra stuff

I was weak in Taylor series(infinite series) and area of rotated shapes.

Also, so far I backpacked CALC 3, ENGR 101, CHEM 130 + 125(126). Any suggestion? I am kinda worried that I am only taking 13 credits…

I think you should go for Calc3. The Calc 2 is similar to Calc BC. Are you taking Math 215?

@billcsho yes if I am taking the Calc 3, that would be Math 215. Is math 215 really easier than calc 2? what concepts does math 215 cover?

I’m in a similar situation but I got a 4 on BC although I like math and want to go for calc 3. I just feel like calc 2 will be a waste I’d be retaking the same class…I looked at their final and it’s exactly stuff we did in BC.

Calc 3 is multivariable calc so it’s like stuff you’ve done but 3rd dimension (x,y,z)

I’ve taken Calc 3 and I can say the the only things you need from Calc 2 is knowledge on how to integrate. I never saw anything related to series in Calc 3, and the area of rotated shapes isn’t necessary. It only helps with visualizing in 3d. You start with vectors, then parametrization of 3d curves, partial derivatives, double + triple integration, line integrals and surface integrals. The first 1/3 of the class only needs derivatives, but the last 2/3 is integration + visualization heavy. There’s really no need to repeat Calc 2 if you are strong with integration. My feelings on Calc 2 were similar to yours when I backpacked.

By the way I had a schedule similar to yours for my freshman year. I had the same classes but with EECS 183 (i wanted to transfer from LSA to ENG) instead of Engr101. I also had ENGR110 since I didn’t know what engineering major I wanted. Just be prepared for Chem 125 to take up a 4 - 6 hours (or more) outside of lab every other week to make the presentation even though the class is only 2 credits.

Tkim, if you’re looking for another class, you might consider Econ 101. If I remember correctly, that one WILL count for HU/SS requirements (someone else can confirm) and I believe some engineering majors require it. Shouldn’t be too hard.

Absolutely go for Calc 3.

Use your AP credits. Do NOT let them go to waste. Rather than retaking classes, you should graduate early, take less credits per semester, take more useful classes, etc.

As long as you know how to integrate and differentiate, you should be fine taking Calc 3.

Furthermore, Calc 2 at U-M sucks

It feels like a high school class. The class takes place in a small, crappy classroom with a chalkboard and terrible desks.

There is team homework. Team homework sucks. You solve difficult math problems that are completely different than what is on the exams in groups. Team homework in my section eventually became everyone asking the GSI how to do all of the problems. Additionally, you are supposed to write detailed explanations of how the team work together.

I have heard something like Calc 2 is the most failed class at U-M. I didn’t find Calc 2 insanely difficult. The material is not difficult. The difficulty comes from the wording of the questions. It’s sometimes hard to understand what is being asked. The exams also state that you may not ask questions regarding the exam because your mathematical interpretation of the question is also being tested.

Thanks guys! I have one quick question. Does Calc 3 have some reviews on concepts from BC Calc in the beginning of the year?

Also, Is there a way to skip Chem…T.T? I want to major in Computer Science, so I think chem would just be a waste of time.

@tkim5574
I didn’t take Calc 3 at UM, but when I took it, the only thing I remember being used from Calc 2 were integrals. The review began with polar coordinates(not big in Calc 2), with double and triple integrals, and integration with substitution to solve multi-order Differential Equations coming later on. Don’t know how it would be at UM, though.

You can try to take Chemistry (maybe even online) at another institution over the summer and have it transfer.

Thanks! I am taking Calc 3!

One more quick question…hehe… I waitlisted myself for one of the classes and I got an email saying that I’ve been issued a class permission to override… How do I enroll now that I got a spot in the class I waitlisted myself?
