Do you know if the new MCAT requires 2 semesters of Calculus? What about Statistics?
Or is it one semester of calculus, one semester of statistics?
Definately statistics. Don’t think there’s calculus on MCATs. But it’s a prereq for med school
Technically, I don’t think is any calculus on the MCAT.
There are topics dealing with statistics, though.
Look at complete MCAT 2015 Exam Content p.3:
“an understanding of calculus is not required…”
Okay, thanks. So, for the MCAT, one needs to take statistics.
What about med schools, do they typically want two semesters (my understanding) or only one (this was mentioned from someone usually well-informed, but conflicts with what I’ve “known”…)
Of math or of calculus? Definitely two semesters of math, but I think the vast majority only require one semester of calc.
Calculus. Ie, so they expect calc1&2 or just calc 1? It’d make a lot of difference for a student interested in genomics who wishes to take a lot of statistics classes.

Try google search of med schools you’re interested in
I’ve already checked a few, but I’m trying to figure out whether it’s like when a college says “2 years of foreign language, 3 recommended” and you need 4 to be competitive, so 2 semesters of calculus… or if really 1 semester is fine?
Although it’s been some time I remember S having some confusion from some med school’s website about fulfilling math req. I think it was AP credit related. S just took next step and emailed school’s admission. School cleared up his confusion. Easy peasy. So if website is confusing, try contacting admission office directly. Personally I’d recommend writing as opposed to calling.
I don’t believe the requirements game works the same way at med schools like undergrad. Most people try to meet the minimums needed outside of their majors because every school seems to have their own twist on these requirements and so it is hard to do more than what they ask. The biggest twist I have found is that if the college that you go to does not list your AP credit on the transcript as having been accepted, it can’t be used at the medical school.
There is one program at Harvard requiring several semesters of Calculus. Most others seem to need the minimum expected of about 1 semester.
This is a bit old but it does indicate which schools expect a Calculus credit. Except those stating NR, I would read all others as requiring Calculus.
Thank you for the link!
I saw the Harvard program, it’s the HST option, which is in-between MD/PHD and strict MD.
This actually makes things so much easier, since the student in question wanted to be able to get into a graduate epidemiology/statistics class junior or senior year (which he could if he completed the prereqs, due to being in the Honors College), and having to take Calc2 got everything out of sync.
