I’ve been ghosting CC for a while but it’s only recently that I’ve found myself with a legitimate question. I noticed alot of CCers who are mathematically inclined do lots of competition math – math olympiads, math competitions, etc. My friend and I were interested in doing the same thing, but we haven’t had experience in competition-style math and were thinking of starting a club of the sort in order to prepare ourselves for them (our school has no math club whatsoever).

That said, I have many questions about how such a math club works. I figured since many CCers go to schools with established math clubs, you’d be able to answer my questions.

What do you do at meetings? Do you just sit and do math problems? If so, in groups or as individuals?

Where would you be able to find practice problems/strategies for doing well in competition-style math? Are there actual books you can buy, or is it just from the official websites? What kinds of problems are they?

As for competitions, how do they work? Are they only exam-style ones like the AMC or are they actual olympiad competitions? How do you sign up for them or find out about ones in your area?

Extra information about math clubs, i.e. how many times you meet per week, how a successful club should be run, etc.
