Alright so I finally did my Math placement and I sort of fluked it or something cos it said I’m level L which would put me to be suitable for the harder 150 series course. Only thing is I dunno if I’m good enough for it cos the placement test was all multiple choice which made it easy to guess answers.

I’m gonna be a Business major, but I’m thinking about going into Human Resources so I probably won’t need too much math. I’m just wondering if there is even any point of doing the harder 150 series course other than for the sake of challenging myself…

Should I go with the harder course or the easier course? I’m thinking if at the end of the day you graduate, none of it matters, so would the easier course be better for me?

There’s no point taking the 150 series unless you think you might change your major to one that needs it. If you’re sure you’re going to stay with a major that only requires the 130 track, then stick with it. There’s absolutely no reason in challenging yourself with useless GEC classes anyway, that’s what your major classes are for.

Go with the 130 series. My business major son had your score last year and went with 130s. He ended up with a /a- for all 3 quarters.

I am a current Fisher honors students who took the 150 series. I wouldn’t recommend taking that series unless you are looking to apply to an honors program in business or perhaps switch to Finance or Accounting.

A number of the people I took 151.01 and 152.01 with had taken calculus in high school, which I hadn’t, and a lot of them were in majors requiring a higher math aptitude than business. The material moved quickly, and was difficult. Averages on the midterms and finals were usually 60-70%. The class was curved, by something like 10+ percentage points, and a significant number of people still failed.

I’ve heard 150 is a breeze but I took 151 (twice) and it was awful. Plus the math department isn’t very helpful at all…

would other schools count MATH 131 as calculus 1 or only MATH 151?
