math dilema

hey SB people , i just ran into a huge dilema :(

i took ap calc AB in my jr yr and received a 5 ( more like a curse than a blessing )
since i received the 5 , i was placed into math 3C ( DIff eqn and lin alg)
i am nervous that i might fail this course so can i change into math 3b during like the 1st week like sept 21st ?

thank you

I think you can, you just wont get units for it because you’ve already “taken” the course.

don’t worry. 3c doesn’t require any knowledge from AP Calc BC. i checked the syllabus a few months ago.
and most ppl who get 5’s or 4’s on their Calc AB exams are placed into 3C.

It probably depends on your college. I heard that the college of engineering won’t allow that. But for the college of letters and science, you can take math 3B and get units for it. because a 5 on AP Calc AB only earns you credit for math 3A. actually, i got a 5 too, but i was placed into 3B. It turned out to be an easy class too (got A+), so if you think you will be able to do well then take it, because it will help make your GPA look good LoL.

I suggest getting one of the Calculus problem-solver books and spending a few hours per week this summer getting back up to speed on calculus, if the last time you saw it was 11th grade.

ya i am in chemical engineering and i am thinking of finishing the integration part of Princeton review (i am decent in the derivatives part) before school starts. is that wise or am i working my self up too much ?

If it was me, I wouldn’t try to learn new material before school starts. That’s what the class is for, and there’s no reason to think you can’t learn it as well as anyone else. On the other hand I’d want to review material from calculus that I’ve already learned, since they’re going to expect that you know and can use it.

will the professors go over some materials that were covered in math 3b ?
or will they jump straight to math 3c right off ?
thanks

i took math 3c last winter and they jumped straight to 3c since no material is related to 3b.

ok thank you consent
and on a level of difficulty from 1-10 wat would you say the difficulty of math 3c is ?
thanks again

scale 1-10 (1 being easiest) i would say its around 4-5. Many students are not familiar with diff eqn, but it should be fairly easy to understand after the second/third week of class.

THANK YOU , THANK YOU , THANK YOU , THANK YOU , THANK YOU , !!!
so not too bad , eh ?

Just FYI, a 5 on the Calculus AB exam gives you credit for Math 3A and you’re given the option of Math 3B or 3C. Whether you take 3B or 3C is entirely up to you. So if you do want to switch into Math 3B, you can do so before classes start.

i wasn’t given the option for taking math 3b
[Mathematics Placement Examinations](http://www.math.ucsb.edu/ugrad/placement.php)

AB Test and AB subscore:

Score of 1= No unit credit; must take CPT to determine placement
Score of 2= No unit credit; placement into Math 3A without taking CPT
Score of 3 or 4= 4 units of credit (=Math 3A) placement into Math 3B
Score of 5= 4 units of credit applied to Math 3A. Subject matter credit for Math 3B; placement into Math 3C.

I would call or email an academic advisor for your major. I had friends in a similar situation when I started and they were given the option.
