Math IIC Nightmare

So, I consider myself pretty good at the math/ sciences. I got a 750 on the Chem SAT II soph. year and I got a 800 on the May Sat I math section. Then comes June, and I took the SAT II Math IIC, expecting a 750+. Haha, well I got a 660 and flipped out. So I'm going to retake it and do practice tests and all that good crap for Oct. But if any1 wants to comfort me that would be very cool.

More Importantly....How does going from a 660 to say a 750+ (which can be done) look to a college? Is it, "kid had a bad day," "kid got lucky," or is the 660 completely disregarded.

that seems to happen to a lot of people and im sure the colleges will look at it and say "kid had a bad day." you did well on your other math test and that'll also prove that you are capable of getting a better score. feel better. it's not the end of the world <3

The admissions officers will most likely never see your lower score, as a secretary will just write down your best ones in a file for them to see. The secretary will verify what you put. They won't even see that it is a retake most of the times.

that's comforting. i got a 680 and i just finished ap calc ab. and with everyone saying how easy it is to hit 800.. and the fact that i'm asian and supposed to be good at math (biggest lie ever) does not help.

How are you planning to prepare for your retake?

A 660 is a nightmare?

For Math Level 2, it is, since that's the 44th percentile.

no it ain't.

dude, the sat is what you make. i was at princeton and they said transcript and everything is else is more important. the sat is a guide. now, don't go believe the 650 mark, and you are fine. plus, it's on test. it won't do anything.

also, the admission dean said that taking it more than twice is a waste of your time.

dude take the IC!!! It's a great alternative to taking the IIC. A good number of colleges will directly correlate IC scores to IIC scores because they know that the IC curve is much harder than the generous IIC curve.

I know that the MIT admissions rep said they will treat a 750 on IC equally to a 750 on IIC for example. Because a 750 IC is like 3 wrong, and on IIC its like 8-9 wrong. Same for 800. They know that a lot of kids with 800 on IIC got 4 or 5 wrong, and/or omitted some, but to get an 800 on IC is 0 wrong even though the questions are somewhat easier.

So what I mean is, if you take the IC, it wouldn't exactly be a "retake" wouln't it?

definitely take iic if i were you

MIT definitely has a preference for IIC.. come on

Math IIC i got an 800 and i was only in the top 14th percentile. the reason why people say its so easy is that all the really smart people take math IIC and do really really well. The test basically discourages average students from taking it. In reality, the test IS quite difficult

"MIT definitely has a preference for IIC.. come on"

Actually, I went to visit in March, and the admissions reps (2 of them) sincerely told me that IC and IIC are considered on equal terms. I kno it sounds unbelievable, but it's the truth. Don't ask me why. It just is.

That's why I took the IC. Otherwise I definitely would have taken the IIC, but I discovered that there was no need since MIT is the only school I'm applying to that needs 3 SAT II tests.

It's ok! I'm probably strongest in math and when I took the math IIc in may I got a 650! Sure, I hadn't prepped at all, but it was a pretty big blow.
Then I bought Barron's and for the next month just studied out of that, although I didn't even finish all of their practice tests, and in June I got a 790! So don't lose hope, I'm sure that you'll get a really high score considering you have the whole summer to study!

do me a favor and pick up Meylani's 15 practice tests

i took three of those the day before and got 800... (with some kaplan review which wasn't really that good)

also put EVERY FORMULA (listed in say a Barrons book or Kaplan + PR books combined) onto ur TI-83+...i had to use 2 that i didnt know EXACTLY and that might make the difference in the final score, you never know

but seriously, using meylani will give you a sweet score (and no, i do not work for him, lol)

using an 89 will also help. Also, many schools strongly prefer or require IIC. Almost all engineering programs that require SAT IIs require IIC. Stanford requires all applicants to submit a IIC score.

660 is a 44th percentile? holy..

my nightmare is worse.. ive been doing very well in trig / precalc, i thought it was so easy because our class is based a lot on tests, but anywho, i used a little barron's, got intimidated, and finished sparknotes. i ended up getting a 560. i have no clue what happened, but i def i have to retake that. i consider myself good at math too.

grab rusen meylani's book. although i got more than 15 wrong in first test, i managed 800 in June test. Seriously, going through 5 of his tests, real one seemed MUCH easier.
