How is the mathematics department at Rice? I would still be a Pre-med but I am thinking of majoring in Mathematics rather than Biochemistry. Are the math classes hard, or do u need to be a Math savant in order to do well. I like numbers and calculus and algebra, but I don't like statistics. What courses would be required in order to be a math major?

bahaha. I was a math major for two weeks this semester, but that’s just me.

You can absolutely major in Math and do premed, since premed’s only a few prereqs, and if you’re a math type person, it’s a fairly easy major.

It’s only Math 101/102, multi diffe and eight electives, as defined here [Rice University](http://ga.rice.edu/programs.aspx?FID=2147483730)

That said, I blew through multi and diffe and thought they were fairly easy, but Math majors are something else. It’s a lot of theory and abstractness that you don’t necessarily get in a more “arithmetic” like in calculus.

So majoring in math doesn’t require you to be a mathematical genius?

Does majoring in a science help you attain a higher MCAT score than other majors?

I was accepted ED, and I’m planning on being a math major. Although my name suggests I’m planning on being premed, I’m actually less sure about that part now. I’m hoping that you don’t have to be a genius. Math has always been my strongest subject, and I’ve always been top or my class in math, but compared to some people, I’m worried.

That’s how I feel. I still wanna be a Pre med though. There is this Indian sophomore at my school that made out at Lawrence University for math. He took a class online from Stanford. He already took all of calc, linear algebra, abstract geometry. I’m no where as smart as him in math.

You’ll get plenty of advising during OWeek, but math is one of those majors you just have to take if you think you’re majoring in it…Math majors are a different type of people.

You definitely don’t have to be a “math genius” to be a math major, and don’t worry if other people from your high school have taken whatever courses. Honestly, after the first few intro courses, Rice levels out in terms of class advantage, and then it depends on how much effort you put into classes.

As for the MCAT, I couldn’t say since I haven’t taken it yet, but from what I’ve heard from advisors, it’s just how much you study for it. to be a premed, you have to take all the standard prereqs, and it’s only those prereqs that the MCAT tests, so no worries there if you’re a natural sciences major or not.
