Math Placement Exam

cool. thanks so much.

oh its also dependent of if you gave all the same info (name, ss#, etc) cos thats how they link grade reports. Thats what i keep hearing in ap etsts "make sure you put your ss#, do not guess because you may get multiple grade reports" lol

who else is taking it at ucla june 3rd?

i might be taking it at UCLA june 3rd....if you give me a piggyback ride there...seriously though, UCLA is the closest to me, so I'm sure I'm going to take it then and there.

do you know if you have to sign up, pay fees...? i think i want to take it june 10th at cal, but its kinda pretty soon and i'm not sure if i should sign up or do something

i'll wear my ucsd sweatshirt....

can we only take it once?

no, we can take it twice

lol seriously?

you don't sign up or pay fees. you just bring yourself and id or something like that. it says right in the email.

Yeah, it does. Peruse the email before you ask questions, guys. That way, we won't have to be redundant.

It looks like I won't be able to take the MPE until September. I'm booked on both the weekends of June 3 and June 10, and there's no way I'm making it down to southern Cal just to take that exam in July. I wonder if that affects my scheduling of classes in any way. Hm.

yeah but the time its in september is the only day i can make it to my orientation...aren't there people going away all summer too?? im leaving the day after the june 10th exam at cal... i feel like there are either going to be a bunch of ppl at the september orientation or none.

oh yeah when do classes actually start?

@ Lara:

Yeah, Move-In Day is the 14th. I'll probably be taking it on the 13th or 14th because I have orientation afterwards (I'm in Sixth and we have ours late). This test is just plainly inconvenient.
According to the academic calendar on the official website, the fall quarter begins on Sept. 18 and classes begins Sept. 21.
I'm having quite a long summer. I wanted to see you guys sooner, though. Oh well. Guess I'll have to restrain my excitement for awhile.

I don't meet any of the requirements. But I don't plan on majoring in math/anything math related. It says I can fulfill the math requirement with something like cognitive science/philosophy/poli sci. Do I still need to take this stupid test? Is the test only for people wanting to take pre-calc/calc? Do all ucsd students eventually have to take a calc class?? ahh help

I have another question. The e-mail has a list of requirements in order to be exempt from the MPE, but what if I just took the AP for calc BC this year? I won't receive my scores until July, but if I send in my scores ASAP (assuming I got 2+), I shouldn't have to take the exam in Sept. anymore, right? CONFOUND IT, I NEED CONFIRMATION.

I don't know lol. What I would do is to take the MPE JUST in case you didn't get a 2+. You never know. If you wait until September I most of us would have register for our classes already. Therefore, you would be unable to get the classes you wanted. So just take the MPE because you never know.

That's the problem. I can't even take the exam BEFORE September; my summer is booked until August, with the exception of one weekend in July. And they're only administering the test in southern Cal that weekend, meaning I'd have to FLY down there just for the test. That's such BS.

isnt the test on pre-cal? we're all gna do fine, its only 2 hours out of the day and i doubt anyones gna study...

Yeah, i took kinda of a pre-test just to see how it is. Pretty easy. If you feel confident with your score, and can't make, then you can't make it. If you're an engineering major it might screw you over if you don't get a 2+ on the calc exam (knock on wood). But i'm sure you did well on the test, so you should be fine. gl

To the worrywarts:

I verified to make sure this was possible and sure enough, it is.

Instead of taking the test and going into that math class next year I'm just going to take Calc. at a community college the summer before sophomore year, given my non-mathematical major (Int'l Studies) she said this was feasible (and even advisable for the humanities-type people)
