Math placement test result

According to the website
Department of Mathematics: Indiana University Bloomington
"If one scores between 20-24 on this exam one can obtain credit for one semester of Calculus, Math-M211 for 4 credit hours and confidently continue studying mathematics at a more advanced level. "

I got 22 in my optional test but my adviser still ask me to take M211, should I talk to my adviser again?

It is more prudent to base your decision on:

Did you take AP Calc AB/BC and what are your scores?

What is your major?

Are you still majoring in cognitive science. And if so, are you doing the B.A. or the B.S.? If you are doing the B.A. in Cognitive science, then I think credit for M211 you earned on the test would be all the math you need to graduate.

I think I going with a B.S in cognitive science,

Per the pdf file outlining Cognitive Science requirements, if you are doing the B.S. degree then it is probably to your advantage to follow your advisor’s recommendation to take M211, since the B.S. degree requires three math courses “including M211, another at the 200 level or above, and one at the 300 level above”, per the pdf file. The lowest you could take would be M211. Then add M212 and Math K310 Statistical Techniques to give you three classes. Math K310-type three-hundred level statistics classes are required for many majors in the COAS, just as Econ E370 Statistical Analysis for Business and Economics is required for business majors. The COAS bulletin section on Cognitive Science points out that “PSY K300 and equivalent statistics courses” may subsititute for Math K310. See page 96.

bthomp, thanks for the information. really helpful!

but the problem I’m having right now is,do I need to take M211 ? since I score between 20-24. Which means I should automatically get the credit for M211 and move on to the next level.?

thank you

Your decision is not whether you need to take M211. That is a matter of fact, you don’t because you already have credit for it.

The decision is whether you should take M211. If the adviser you spoke with was just a general UD or Hutton adviser, you should probably contact someone in the actual department. They should be able to tell you how that decision typically plays out.

Sorry that I misread your post. I don’t know why your advisor would say to take M211 if you already have credit for it.

If you are certain that you are doing the B.S. in cognitive science, you might consider taking your three-hundred level math class in Fall and then sorting out which calculus class to take later. Math K310 is probably easier than M211 or M212. Also, STAT-S 300 INTRODUCTION TO APPLIED STATISTICAL METHODS (MATH-M 014 or equivalent is the only prerequisite for STAT S300, and M014 is not even a freshman level class) has a reputation of being one of the easier upper-level statistics classes. You could check with someone in the Cognitive Science department to see if STAT S300 will substitute for Math K310 (M119 is the prerequisite, and you have M211) as your 300-level math class, and/or which calculus you should take. There is a good chance that STAT S300 will be an acceptable substitute, since PSY K300 will substitute for Math K310. You could send an email or telephone them.
