I just took the OSU math placement D test and it gave me course U. Meaning they don’t know. I am in AB AP Calulus and the questions they asked were generally easy. Is U course good or bad in my case? I know I have to take another test during orientation.

I’m a transfer student and have my orientation packet in front of me right now. This is what it says regarding the “U” grade:

“In some cases, the assessment will not be able to determine a math placement level. If this happens, you will be given a placement level U (“undetermined”) instead of a math course code. If your placement level is U, you must take an alternate assessment the morning of your orientation program.”

I’m in the same boat as you. I’m in Calc AB, took test D and got “U”. I emailed the math advisors and they said it’s most likely because there’s a big inconsistency( good or bad) with what we got on that test compared to our SAT/ACT math score. I’m really hoping that the inconsistency is on the good side because my math ACT score was ehh, but the placement test seemed really easy and I even checked over my work for a long time. But I’m still really nervous.

I wonder if it’s because you’re taking AP Calc. The highest math that test D will place you into is Calculus I (Math 1151); OSU is fairly generous with AP scores and a 3 will give you credit for 1151. Hopefully you’ll receive your AP score before your orientation (my son received his last year 2 days before his orientation - just make sure OSU is listed to receive the official test score). My guess is they’ll have you schedule 1151 otherwise at orientation.

A “U” means your answer were inconsistent and the system couldn’t reliably place you in a class. You missed easy questions but answered more difficult ones correctly. It is also the designation given to students who are believed to have cheated on the exam. You will take a similar assessment under monitored conditions when you are on campus.

We were told recently at a visit that the placement test should still be taken. My son also took AP calc but took the test anyway as they suggested.

If you took the AP exam (say junior year) and have the score and it’s 3 or higher (and official score is sent to OSU)
you do not need to take the placement test. If you are currently taking the AP Calc course and will take the test in May, you may or may not need to take the placement test. If your orientation is before you receive AP scores, you’ll need to take the placement test. If your orientation is after you receive your scores, you do not need to take the placement test unless your score is 1 or 2.
