How has everyone done so far? How do they tell you at orientation? Do they give you a score or just tell you where you got placed at? I took the exam, but haven't been to orientation... kind of stressing not knowing... Also, I took while I was sick, sadly. I didn't have the opportunity to take it when I was healthy. What should I do? Would love to hear some feedback from students who have already gone to orientation! :)

If I fail a couple of questions, what are my chances of getting a Precalculus course or Math 115? I really want to get in at least in a Precalculus course…

MY D had orientation 2 weeks ago and they told her what her score was. She placed into a higher Math course. @astrogirl - I think you can take it again before orientation, but I am not sure. As I recall, they did say that students could take it one more time after orientation, just in case of situations like yours or if they really didnt take it seriously the first time.

My kid (actually I) was concerned because he is transferring with almost all his gen eds done, and his first major course requires MATH140. We were in the same exact situation. There is a phone number for the math placement office, and you can try to explain your situation…we were actually able to get the guy to let us know what course he placed into, even though officially “students aren’t told their results until orientation.” Funny enough, my son wasn’t told his results at orientation. There was just no registration block on the class that required the result he needed. We didn’t want to come into orientation not knowing, because it would have affected which courses he’d try to get into, and quite honestly, might have had my son choose to take the equivalent over the summer at community college. Overall, I gotta imagine if you do fine in the Algebra portions of the test, you’re going to get into 115 without problem.

They will be giving you some sort of report sheet, I believe. I didn’t take it (already have Calc I-III done), but I remember them saying it will be with your transcript evaluation.

@astrogirl when you go for orientation, they will give you report sheet mentioning what score you had and what class you were placed in.I believe after 30 days of taking your first attempt(not 100% on days but its something like 30 days, you can check with one of the advisor on that) you can take test again to placed in higher class(if you get better score).

Thank you all for your help! I just have one last question, which day do they give you the report sheet? The first or the second day? @GrandIdiot @SoofDad

I’m sure they give it to you when you do your advising.

My D got the report sometime during the first day

Thank you! @SoofDad and @lenmonster

I went to orientation on the 9-10th, and they gave us our results on a piece of paper the day of scheduling (morning of the second day) in a one-on-one session with my advisor. It’s just a horizontal list of math classes, and they circle whichever one you placed in. I scored around 70-85% (can’t remember the exact score, but I really just skimmed through it from 2-4 am two days before orientation), and placed into whatever the most advanced class was. If you have AP math credit, they said that overrides the math placement test.

Hope that helps a bit :)

Nice. My kid went to transfer orientation, and he didn’t even have a one on one with his advisor. They just sat a group of students down at the registration computers and let them have at it, though there were people to help with questions. He confirmed to me today he never got a piece of paper or anything, but again, there was no registration block on MATH140 and the major course that required it as a co-requisite.

Omg! I went to orientation, and even though I was sick when I took the math placement exam, I got into Calculus 1 (Math 140)! Thank you everyone for your help! I guess I won’t need to take it again… btw I will be taking it with Denny Gullick! ;)

Astrogirl, what is your major? You shouldn’t take 140 unless you need it. It’s very challenging, and is basically the first math for engineering, math, natural sciences (including physics) and computer science majors. Even though you placed in doesn’t mean you should take it. If you are doing business, for example, there is a calculus for that that is easier.

Umm yes I need it. I’m doing a double major in Astronomy and Physics! hence my username astrogirl!

Well, there you go. I thought that was just your superhero name.

Does the MPE allo you to open other windows?

Yes it does… ;)
