Math Placement Exam

Has anyone taken the math placement exam yet? I'm wondering what it's like, what's on it, how difficult it is, is it timed, etc? What does the math placement exam determine?

[University of Maryland - New Student Orientation](http://www.orientation.umd.edu/mathinstruct.html)

"The Math Placement Exam is not a graded test. Instead it is used to place you in the appropriate level of math. Your score will automatically be sent to your adviser who will then help you to pick the right math courses when you’re on campus for Orientation. "

I thought some parts were pretty hard, especially because I had only taken precalc. And since I knew I was going to place out of math anyway with my SAT, I didn’t really put much effort into it. I also placed into the highest possible math class the test tests for, hahaha. So that should give you an idea of the test. As for the time, I think we were given an hour, but I’m not sure. It goes up through precalc.

what was explained to me was that its a placement exam, in which the purpose is to make sure that people dont take a math course that’s too hard for them. It doesnt prevent u from taking an easy math course.

question though. How do u get your results of the placement test. Daughter took it about a week ago and would be curious to see results. Are they available anywhere online?

You get your results at orientation, when you break off into the different majors and learn about scheduling and program requirements.

Make sure that you take the test (and tell anyone else you know going to UMD) to take the test BEFORE Orientation. Every year there’s several people who act as though they’ve never heard of it and end up taking it at Orientation!

Here is more info regarding the sequence of Math courses, etc. This is a subject that always generates a LOT of questions at orientation; it helps if you understand what the different math sequences are. You can always take a lower math course than they recommend, and you can decide whether you want to retake a math course if you have AP credit…

http://www.math.umd.edu/undergraduate/credit/placement.html</a></p>

I thought the test was extremely easy, enough so to worry me for a couple minutes before I hit “submit.”
The only thing this test does is place you out of basic algebra and trig stuff. So if you got a 4 or 5 in AP Calc AB/BC, credit for the class(es) will be applied if your Math Placement score shows satisfactory knowledge through trig (precalc).

And just because you place into calc, doesn’t necessarily mean you should take it! I learned this the hard way.

But if you get a 4 or 5 on AP Calc AB or BC, there is no reason NOT to take the credit or to accelerate. The only reason to not take the credit is if you are not sure about your level of knowledge (despite getting a 4 or 5).

i didnt want to make a new thread, but i just hit submit on part 1 of the test, and nothing happened except the page reloaded…
was my test submitted correctly?? the timer is still going down

mellokitty, if you hit submit and are sure that each question shows “1/1 submission”, then don’t worry you are fine. It’s natural that the time doesn’t stop but is still counting down. Just hit “home” to go back and do another part of the test if you want to continue.

If you have finished precalculus, or to be safe i would say calculus ab in high school, i think the test should be pretty easy for you.

Please correct me if I am wrong, thanks:D

And if something really did go wrong, then you can always call the math department and see if they can reset the exam for you. There’s a phone number on their website and on the website for the engineering school. Good luck!

The test as a whole took around 25 minutes even though they give you ridiculous amounts of time. I just didn’t like the fact that when I kept hitting submit assignment, nothing happened but when the time ran out, it said that the test was submitted.
