i just finished the practice placement exam that was given to me online, and i wanted to know if i did well enough to be placed into Calc 1. there were 4 that i did not know how to do or simply got wrong, and then another 3 that are questionable- meaning they COULD be considered “half credit” due to how far i simplified, etc., i just don’t know…but based on those numbers, how did i do?

you know, it will all depend on what the academic advisors decide. Some people will miss or won't do maybe 10 questions and still pass the test to get into Calc. And also, we won't be taking the placement tests until July 4, so our brains might be a bit wrung out from Basic by then anyway.

If you did most of them correctly, off hand I'd say you're good to go. If you've had a pretty good algebra background, and unless the academic advisors at the Academy are as evil as my Calc I professor, you should be fine, since that's what most of the math in calculus involves.

Not until the 4th of July, Viper? I distinctly remember that we took ours on the 4th day of BCT. Not saying that it won't be different this year, but that does seem a little late...

I believe that is what they told us at orientation, I may be wrong though.

How bad are the consequences for not taking the math placement exam on-line?

there aren't any consequences...it's just to help you. also take in to account that you are going to be taking this test when you are tired as hell...you won't do as well on it as you do on the practice test.

Im a little scared. I've already taken Calc 1 and I did good, but the trig prac exam seemed a little challenging :(

Right beside the test they had practice links to help out. I'm going to check up on a couple of areas.

I didn't do the online math practice before I came for basic but I remember talking with a bunch of other almost-cadets :) in the airport the day before inprocessing, and many of them were nervous because they thought the algebra was fairly challenging. So that's probably a normal sentiment. The math placement exams are given in the middle of basic when you're dead tired and not thinking clearly. One girl in my squad answered a little over half of the math questions on the Calc 2 test and ended up validating, if that tells you anything... I wouldn't be worried. They're not hard. That being said, please don't test above your level! If you have only taken Calc 1, do not take the Calc 2 test! I fell asleep in them, but I have heard that they are pretty easy and you can pass them sometimes even if you have a pretty shaky knowledge of the material. That will come back to bite you in the school year...

Can anyone post the link for the prep test, i can't seem to find that letter. Also, are the actual tests multiple choice or free response?

Are the placement exams multiple choice or answer yourself?

All multiple choice if I remember correctly.

I believe this is the link you are looking for http://www.usafa.edu/df/dfms/exam_prep.cfm?catname=dfms

The exam to validate Calc 2 was a fill-in test, but I'm pretty sure all the rest were multiple choice.

Fun... the joys of not doing calc for 2 years...

On that note, how hard is the chem validation test?

I came out of the Chem test sure that I'd be getting no credit in that class. As it turns out, I validated both semesters. I guess it's not that hard.

about that chemistry placement exam....i took chemistry in 11th grade, but i didn't learn a whole lot, and i certainly don't remember much of anything. if i go into the basic chemistry class (100, or 101), will i start out far behind everybody else?

i'm in the same boat. i took chem my 10th grade year and we really didnt learn anything... not that i'd remember it now anyway

Chemistry isn't too bad if you just work hard. I hadn't taken Chemistry since 9th grade and I was horrible at it, but I ended up with a decent grade. Some people say they regret validating chemistry because it just landed them in a harder chem class. I'm not really sure how that works though because I wasn't in that boat.
