Math question

I am a sports marketing and management major and trying to decide what math class to take. For General Ed math modeling requirement I can take the following:

MATH-J 113 Introduction to Calculus with Applications (3 cr.)
MATH-M 118 Finite Mathematics (3 cr.)
MATH-A 118 Finite Mathematics for the soc and behavioral sci (3 cr.)
MATH-V 118 Finite Mathematics with Applications: Finite Mathematics for the Social
and Biological Sciences (3 cr.)
MATH-V 118 Finite Mathematics with Applications: Finite and Consumer Math (3 cr.)
MATH-M 119 Brief Survey of Calculus I (3 cr.)

Do I also have to take another math class for my natural and mathematical science gen ed requirement? If so what two classes do you suggest? All help appreciated. Which math 118 is the easiest?

bump…

TAKE M 119.
Especially if you took AP Calculus. Finite is a BRAND NEW MATH and extremely hard.
Brief Survey of Calculus is almost like Pre-Calc and I’m not saying that it’s extremely hard, because it is, but you’re more likely to find more people who can help you if you’re struggling.

First, I would caution against thinking that M119 will be any easier for a student who took AP Calc. The challenging aspect of the course is really the economic application of extremely simple derivatives. I think taking micro or managerial accounting would be a bigger help for M119 than AP Calc.

Taking a second math class wont fulfill your N&M because one of the classes must be a natural science.

ohsnapitsfaux…I did not take AP calculus in HS because I did not take honors pre-calculus. At my HS you need to take honors pre-calculus before AP calculus. I took pre-calculus and got an A in it so I am also thinking MATH-M 119 Brief Survey of Calculus I would be better than finite math for me. Every post I read says how hard finite math is.

I was under the impression you needed on math class for your math modeling requirement and one math class for your natural and mathematical science gen ed requirement. Am I wrong?

You only need one math class to meet gen ed requirement for N&M. You can meet the N&M requirement with one math class and then an easy N&M like CSCI-A 110 Introduction to Computers and Computing or one of any of these classes [N & M Courses](http://gened.iub.edu/courses/natural_mathsciencescourses.html)
http://gened.iub.edu/requirements/genedrequire.html</a></p>

If you are worried about the math class you could take the equivalent of finite or M119 at your cc in the summer and transfer the credit to IU.
[Credit Transfer Service: Admissions: Indiana University](http://cts.admissions.indiana.edu/)

I would stay away from finite at IU. It might be easy at your cc, though. My son took finite at IU and had to drop it. He took it at cc and got an A, as the content was much, much easier. Probably depends on your cc. He got an A in m119 at IUB.

bthomp1 thanks…the problem is that I am OOS so only certain courses transfer from community colleges.

Did you check the Credit Transfer Service to see if a cc near you will have a finite or calculus class that qualifies for transfer credit to IU. There are hundreds listed. The list for M119 includes many cc’s from around the country.

You can get online finite and calculus classes that transfer to IUB. (I assume online will be accepted by your school at IUB) About $160 per credit hour OOS rate. You can take it in summer or this spring and be done with it.

bthomp1… I live in California and our CC and State schools have dramatically cut back on the number of classes being offered and it is very difficult to get certain classes if you are not a full-time student. Since you seem to understand the Gen ED requirements at IU I have another question for you.

I got an 4 on my AP stats test which gives me credit for Stats 300 at IU. I was told that I cant use that towards my math requirement for N&M because they only accept Stats 100 for credit. Figured no big deal I will take stats 100 for my math requirement for N&M. I was just told that I cant take stats 100 because I am receiving credit for Stats 300 due to my AP grade. That is not really true because my stats 300 credit is not counting for anything. I am confused about this. Have you heard this before?
